It was Spirit Night at the University School ice arena on Saturday, December 7th, and the USM co-op girls hockey team played a spirited game against the Madison Metro Lynx.  However, the Wildcats’ could not turn their inspired play into shots on net and goals. As a result, they lost to the Lynx 4-0 in the non-conference contest.

The Wildcats knew they had to play well against their undefeated visitors, and they gave a good effort. But they were out shot. Sami Stommel, the Wildcats’ goaltender, played well, stopping 26 of the 30 shots the Lynx fired her way.  Camryn McKersie, the Lynx goalie made 12 saves at the other end of the ice.

The home team had their chances.  They had 10 power play opportunities but could not convert a single one into a goal.  They did play well while killing the 4 penalties they had, including one situation when they were two skaters short.

The Lynx scored what would prove to be the game winning goal in the first period.  Jenna Culp halted a Wildcats’ clearing attempt on the right mid-boards of the Wildcats’ zone.  Culp immediately fired a shot; it went past Stommel at 8:21.

The score went to 2-0 midway through the second period.  As the Lynx exerted forechecking pressure in the Wildcat zone, the puck went to Sam Olander at the left point.  She passed it to her defensive partner, Ally Jacobson.  Jacobson immediately returned the puck to Olander.  Olander then whipped a shot into net at 8:43.

The Lynx added two goals to their total in the third period.  They scored the first of these while skating shorthanded at 3:26.  Chandler skated the puck out of the Lynx end and forwarded a pass to Rachel Mirwald who was streaking along the right boards.  Mirwald skated into the Wildcats’ end and took a shot.  It turned into a pass as it went onto the stick of Sydney Raaths who was buzzing toward the net.  Raaths knocked the puck in to give the Lynx a 3-0 lead.

Lauren Johnson completed the Lynx scoring when she gunned in a shot from the slot at 8:37.  Raaths and Kaye Bryce were awarded assists on the play.

The Metro Lynx are now 4-0 and 1-0 in the Badger Conference.  They take their unblemished record into the Sun Prairie Ice Arena for a conference game against the Cap City Cougars at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, December 10th.

USM is 1-3-1 and 1-0 in the Eastern Shores Conference.  The Wildcats plan to play another spirited game, and score goals, when they face off against the Warbirds in an Eastern Shores Conference game on Tuesday, December 10th at The Blue Line Ice Center in Fond du Lac.
