Pieterek goal gives Hayward a 1-0 win

Junior Alex Pieterek scored an unassisted goal at 9:22 of the third period to give the Hayward Hurricanes co-op a 1-0 victory over the Wildcats of the University School girls hockey co-op in the opening game of the Annual Gobbler Cup Tournament in Mosinee on Friday, November 29th.

The non-conference clash turned into a defensive battle.  In it, the Hurricanes out shot the Wildcats 20-8.  USM’s sophomore goaltender Sami Stommel turned aside 19 shots while the Hurricanes’ goalie, senior Emma Quimby stopped all 8 of the Wildcats’ attempts.

Although out-shot, the Wildcats forechecked forcefully.  Consequently, the game had a steady pace with excitement at each end of the ice.

Senior Maggie Mueller, one of USM’s captains, summed it up, “We played hard today. There was a lot of effort and we were able to work on our forecheck and begin to execute that. It was disappointing that we couldn’t end with a win but it was a good, hard game.”

The Hurricanes’ shots made it to the net, but Stommel and her defensive cohorts stood firm and turned almost of Hayward’s efforts aside.

As the game remained scoreless into the third period, it became apparent that one goal would decide it.  Pieterek made sure of that.  She grabbed a loose puck in the corner of the Hurricanes’ end and skated away.  She avoided a pinching defender and sped into center ice.  Pieterek then outraced a defenseman and skated into the Wildcats’ end on a breakaway.  She moved in close, pulled the puck past Stommel, and jammed it inside the post at 9:22.

The Wildcats kept at it.  They pulled Stommel with 2:05 left on the clock and nearly scored on a rebound in the final seconds.  But Quimby denied it, and the Hurricanes evened their record at 1-1.  The victory moved them into the Gobbler Cup Tournament’s championship game in which they will face The Central Wisconsin Storm on Saturday, November 30th in Mosinee.

USM is now 0-1-1.  The Wildcats will face the Eau Claire Stars in the tournament’s consolation game on November 30th at Mosinee.
