New Season, New Coaches and 2019-20 Season Underway

Tommy Duren and CJ Lass lead Hilltoppers to Win

The Thunderbirds and Hilltoppers dropped the puck to open the 2019-20 WIAA hockey season in Onalaska. Both teams entered the game with new head coaches and wondering how things will play out in the new 2 division format the WIAA implemented this season.

Onalaska wasted little time in taking the lead as Tommy Duren scored the opening goal at 3:29 of the first period with CJ Lass and Hudson Weber assisting. Colin Comeau bumped the lead to 2 at 5:17, while Lass and Weber picked up their second assists of the evening. Thirty-nine seconds later Mason Manglitz put the puck in the net with an assist from Jordan Degaetano giving Onalaska a 3 goal lead. Dane Hinz finished the period with 15 saves for the Thunderbirds, while Noah Clemment had 2 saves for Onalaska.

The Hilltopper's CJ Lass increased the lead to 4 at 3:29 of the second with an assist from Max Popp. Onalaska took advantage of being on the power play, when Tommy Duren scored at the 5:38 mark with an assist from Lass and Carter Stobb. Twenty seconds later Lass and Stobb assisted on Duren's third goal of the evening and putting the game into run time. The Thunderbirds ended the run time portion of the game on a goal by Will Gunnell with an assist from Oliver Scanlan with 3:07 remaining in the second. Oliver Scanlan added an unassisted goal at 15:28 of the period to make the score Onalaska 6 Baraboo 2 at the end of two.

Onalaska picked up their second power play goal at 2:02 of the third period, when Weber and Degaetano assisted on Peyton Jones goal. Tommy Duren closed out the scoring for the game with 12:07 remaining in the game with Brennan Mason and Carter Stobb assisting.
