Before the game, when Team Wisconsin coach Dave Witting was told that his TW squad's game would be starting at least 30 minutes late, he joked, 'That's okay, we didn't get done until 2:00 this afternoon,' in reference to his team's OT game in the afternoon.
Well, the game started 40 minutes late and the opponent came out firing on all cylinders and as a result, the Minnesota U18s skated off with a 7-0 blanking of TW.
The teams played back-and-forth, even-steven hockey for 16 minutes, but then the floodgates opened.
First, Madison Mashuga scored on a rebound from the high slot to give MN a lead they would not relinquish with just over ten minutes left in the first 'half.'
Two minutes later, Julianna Teske nearly went coast-to-coast before cutting in front and deking TW goalie Emma Quimby for the 2-0 lead.
One minute later, Mashuga was the recipient of a nice back-door pass and just beat the goalie between the outstretched left skate and the post to bump the lead to 3-0.
Sixteen seconds later, Taylor Nelson scored from the left circle to give MN a 4-0 lead, and that is how the first 27 minutes of play ended.
Shots were 18-14 in favor of MN.
The second half saw three MN goals (Nelson, Mashuga, and Olivia Mobley) spread out over a span of 16 minutes as MN earned a decisive 7-0 win.
MN held a 17-13 shot advantage in the period. Quimby stopped 28 shots in the game, while Jocelyn Veary (14) and Veronica Morse (13) combined for 27 saves in the shutout.
