Day one at Minnesota NIT

Day One at the Minnesota NIT saw both the Senior and Junior teams meeting some solid competition right away. Neither team could crack the win column.

The Seniors tied the Minnesota Seniors 2-2 but lost in the tie-breaking shootout. The Junior team played a deep and fast Michigan Senior team and lost 9-1.

The TW Senior team had leads twice against the Minnesota Seniors and held out for a 2-2 tie in pool play. However Minnesota won the shootout 1-0 to win the tie-breaker.

TW got very solid play out of both goalies Garrett Larson and Gavin Abric. Both goalies saw a combined 40 shots. Wisconsin was outshot 15-6 in the first period but scored with just over a minute left in the period on a goal by Cayden Laurvick for a 1-0 lead after one period.

Minnesota early in the second got the first of two second period goals by Dalton Saltness to tie the game up. But TW took a 2-1 lead on a goal from Zach Welsch, who caught a puck in midair, dropped it to his stick and slapped it past the Minnesota goalie for a 2-1 lead.

However with time running out in the second period and TW mere seconds away from taking their lead to intermission, a failed clear on a penalty kill resulted in Saltness' one timer for a 2-2 tie with less than a second left.

Neither team could get a goal in the third period and a shootout ensued where Minnesota won 1-0. Shots were 40-26 in favor of Minnesota.

TW Seniors will play Massachusetts Friday at 2:15.

The TW Juniors faced a fast and skilled Michigan Senior team and really never got going and lost 9-1. Michigan was up 3-0 before TW got their lone goal from Thomas Weis. TW took advantage of a delayed penalty call and got an extra man on the ice. The puck got down low in the Michigan zone where Weis was able to use a wraparound move for the goal.

Michigan however rolled off the next six goals and got a 9-1 win. The TW Junior team will be back on Day Two with a night game against Minnesota's Junior team.
