TW girls, boys both advance to bracket play with shutouts

The Team Wisconsin girls notched their third shutout in four games, blanking Team North Dakota 5-0 Saturday morning in the final pool play contest at the America's Showcase.

TW set the pace from the opening puck drop, as Haley Knauf scored to make it 1-0 just 28 seconds in, with an assist to sister Alyssa.

Each team had a power play chance in the middle of the period, but neither team could capitalize as the period ended 1-0. TW held an 11-4 shot edge in the stanza.

The middle period was scoreless until the six minute mark when Hannah Kolpien made it 2-0. Amber DeLong and Cameron Carmody had assists on the play.

The rest of the period was scoreless even though TW had a 20-7 shot advantage over ND.

It was the third period when TW put the game away.

Just under six minutes in, Amber DeLong tallied to make it 3-0, with an assist to her sister Abbie.

Five minutes after that, the scoreboard read 4-0 after Lauren Carmody's score. Zoe Sternberg got a helper on the play.

And since the game wasn't quite over, Amber DeLong stuck the puck in the net with just 12 seconds left to account for the 5-0 final.

Shots were 13-2 in the period, as TW ended the game with a 44-13 advantage. Jaden Mirek earned her third blanking by stopping all 13 pucks. On the other end, Karlee Schmitt had 39 saves for North Dakota.

With the win, TW earns the #1 seed in the American pool and will compete in the semi-final round Sunday morning at 11:00am against the yet-to-be-determined #2 seed from the National pool.

The Team WI boys squad scored six goals in the first period—including two power play goals and two shorties—en route to a 12-0 win over Team Maryland Saturday afternoon in the final pool play game.

Wesley Knutson scored twice (even strength, shortie); Connor Abric and Hayden Bradbury each scored on the power play; Derek Pawlak had a shortie; and Tommy Duren scored 5-on-5 to make it 6-0. Shots were 15-2 in the period.

The second period was nearly as potent as the first, as TW scored five times, with a pair of man-advantage goals and their third short-handed goal to take an 11-0 lead after 34 minutes of play.

Isaac Lindstrom scored twice (SH and PP); Joey Koller scored on the power play; while Pawlak and Garrett Wilderman each scored even strength. Shots were 23-4 in the period.

Even though only one goal was scored in the final period—Peyton Hanson on the power play—TW did not take its foot off the throttle, firing 21 shots on goal compared to three for Maryland.

TW was 5-for-8 on the power play in the win. Tucker Wittkopf had three assists; Jonathan Zobel, and Kaden Brunson each had two, while Cole Beilke, Bradbury, Duren, Wilderman, Koller, Lindstrom, and Pawlak all added one each.

Joey Greilich stopped nine shots to earn the win. Other the other end, Alex Stella (27) and Peter Van Iterson (27) combined for 47 saves as TW held a huge 59-9 shot edge in the contest. 

Team WI earned the #1 seed in the 'B' Liberty pool and will play in the quarterfinals Sunday morning at either 10:00am or 11:00am against an opponent to be determined.
