Team WI started out fast on Day 2 of America's Showcase, scoring twice in a span of 20 seconds in the middle of the opening stanza, but couldn't get the puck past MN goalie Becca Macklin after that and hung on for a 2-1 victory Friday morning.

TW had a 5-on-3 power play for 43 seconds early in the period, but were unable to score.

That would come four minutes later.

Zoe Sternberg scored with just over eight minutes left in the first to open the scoring. The Carmody Twins (Lauren and Cameron) got assists on the scoring play.

It looked like the rout was on when Anika Einbeck put one past the goalie less than 30 seconds later, with a helper to Haley Knauf, to give TW a two-goal lead.

Not so fast, said MN Green.

There was no scoring the rest of the way in the period, and the scoreboard read 17-5 for shots in favor of TW.

The second period was scoreless, as the PK units of both teams were flawless as TW led the way with three kills, along with one for MN. Shots were a little closer, with TW holding an 11-5 edge in the period.

WI killed off another penalty a few minutes into the third period, but MN would score four minutes later while playing with numerical equality.

Emelia Barker got MN on the board, with an assist to Brooke Stearns, to cut the lead to 2-1 with just over seven minutes left.

Both defenses hung tough as the game wound down, and shots were limited to 12 (8-4 TW) in the period, while Macklin and TW goalie Jaden Mirek turned aside all forays to keep the score at 2-1.

The scoresheet doesn't indicate MN pulled the goalie for an extra attacker, but either way, the horn sounded on a one-goal victory for TW.

Mirek stopped 13 of 14 shots, while Macklin was a bit busier, making 34 saves in the loss.

Amber DeLong and Haley Knauf each had a hat trick, while Alyssa Knauf notched a playmaker in a lopsided 11-0 Team WI victory over Mid-Am Friday evening.

TW scored four goals in the first period to take a 4-0 lead. Goals were scored by Cameron Carmody, Anika Einbeck, Haley Knauf, and Amber DeLong in the period.

In the second period, Team WI put up a 'touchdown' as they scored seven goals. Haley Knauf (2), Lauren Carmody, Amber DeLong (2), Taylar Meier, and Einbeck scored while the team fired 20 shots on net.

TW played the third in 'shutdown' mode, only taking five shots on goal in the period.

Lilly Accola, Challis Prohaska, Dayna Jones, Cameron Carmody, Einbeck, Abbie DeLong, and Hannah Kolpien all added assists in the game. Zoe Sternberg notched a pair of helpers as the team scored 23 points (11g-12a) in the match.

TW held a huge 38-8 shot advantage in the game. Jaden Mirek earned her second shutout with eight saves.

boys

Team Wisconsin boys scored early and late and got a 24-save shutout from goalie Jason Cooke as they blanked Team California 2-0 Friday evening in America's Showcase pool play.

Garrett Wilderman scored four minutes into the contest to give TW a 1-0 lead. Derek Pawlak notched an assist on the even strength goal.

The first period ended 1-0, even though Cali held a 9-5 shot edge.

The PK units and Cali goalie Jacob Hahn ruled in the middle period. Cali killed off two infractions, while TW shut down one. But Hahn was the star of the period, stopping 18 shots. Cooke had six saves in the stanza.

Joey Koller added the final goal with 26 seconds left to account for the 2-0 final.

TW held a slight 13-9 shot edge in the final period. Cooke, as mentioned, had 24 saves, while Hahn stopped 34 shots in the loss.
