Maddy Jablonski scores in second OT for 6-5 win

Maddy Jablonski scored two minutes into the second overtime to give first-time state participant Fox Cities Stars an exciting 6-5 win over Hudson in the 2019 title game Saturday morning/afternoon at The Clamshell.

Even though the team played over 105 minutes in yesterday's semifinal game, Hudson came out strong and scored just 1:12 into the contest.

Hana Hellmers fired a shot from the left circle that trickled under FCS goalie Hattie Berndt for the 1-0 lead. Julia Wareham got an assist on the play.

The Stars had a good opportunity to tie the game when Jablonski cut across the crease from left to right and slid a shot that Hudson goalie Alayna Kunshier kicked away with her left pad.

Hudson made it 2-0 just over six minutes in when a shot was stopped by Berndt, but she couldn't control the rebound and Nikki Olund was there to tap it in. Sydney Hendricks and Morgan Miller got helpers on the play.

Four minutes later, the Raiders added to their lead. Freshman Leah Parker grabbed a loose puck in the NZ, scooted down the left side and fired a shot from the left dot that beat Berndt between her blocker and the left post. The unassisted goal meant the end of Berndt's day, as Annaliese Mauel came into the game at that point.

Shortly after a Hudson penalty put Fox Cities on the power play, the Stars took advantage of the man advantage.

Alaina Schauf grabbed a rebound in the low slot and stuffed it past Kunshier to make it 3-1. Sarah Marvin and Mckayla Zilisch had assists on the play.

Three minutes later, the Stars cut the lead to 3-2 with another power play goal. Tori Nelson fired a shot from the point that was re-directed by Schauf past the Hudson goalie with 1:28 left. Zilisch also had an assist on the play.

Shots were 13-8 in the period, in favor of the Stars.

Hudson had a couple chances on the power play early in the second, but the Stars held strong and would score a couple minutes later playing even strength.

Zilisch took a loose puck down to the low right side and pitchforked a shot past the Hudson goaltender for the equalizer with just over six minutes left. Hanna Hiltunen had an assist on the scoring play.

WiPH Game Summaries

Hellmers put the Raiders ahead on a shot from the top of the right circle after grabbing a loose puck in the neutral zone with just under four minutes left.

The Stars tied the game again with 1:33 left with a shot from the high slot by Nelson that ticked off the glove of the Raider netminder.

The period ended with the score tied and the shots were almost even, 6-5 Hudson.

The third period was scoreless until the clock ticked past the five minute mark. Leah Parker won the faceoff and pushed the puck ahead to the bottom of the left circle, where it was picked up by Julia Wareham, who fired a tough angle shot that beat Mauel between the blocker and the left post.

It looked like Hudson was going to pull out a one-goal win, but Zilisch had different ideas.

With an extra attacker on the ice and sticks flying all over the place, the freshman forward grabbed a rebound in the high slot and calmly went top shelf to tie the game. Annika Horman and Hull had assists on the play.

After a scoreless eight minute period, the game went to the first 17 minute period.

Then it was Maddy Jablonski time. She grabbed a pass from Hull in the left circle, skated across the slot and waited for her opening, sliding the puck just past the outstretched left pad of Kunshier at the 2:32 mark.

In the game, Mauel (14) and Berndt (4) combined for 18 saves, while Kunshier was busier, stopping 26 on her end.

For Fox Cities, they took home the gold trophy in their first state appearance. They finish the season with a mark of 24-4, while the Raiders end with a record of 16-10-2.
