MJ Hammett has been following high school hockey since 1996. A graduate of Beloit Memorial High School, he had the opportunity to broadcast his alma mater's lone State title in 1999 for WGEZ radio in Beloit.
Hammett joined Wisconsin Prep Hockey in 2004 and is very involved at all levels in hockey. Besides doing a weekly column for Wisconsin Prep Hockey, he's the voice of Janesville Jets hockey on the internet, the PA voice of Janesville Bluebird hockey, and has a son who plays mite hockey for Janesville.
During the season, look for his Slap Shots column weekly on Wisconsin Prep Hockey. Hammett will be covering short stories around the state, and will follow former high school players at the junior levels and higher. And don't be surprised if he's at YOUR game.

Team Wisconsin on Saturday gave Shattuck St. Marys an early 3-0 lead in the second period.
Then they said enough is enough.
TW tied the game at 3 thru 2 periods and then outscored Shattuck 3-1 in the third period for a 6-4 win at Ice Hawk Arena in Stevens Point. TW had 6 different goal scorers in the game, with Kyle Lee having a goal and 2 assists. Saxton Soley held Shattuck at bay after the early deficit, and finished stopping 32 of 36 shots for the win.
TW hit double figures in goals in the late game Saturday, and beat Team NW 10-7. Very balanced scoring once again in this game as 8 players had at least 1 goal. Simon Leahy of USM had 2 goals and 1 assist, while Cliff Watson had 4 assists for TW.
TW was looking for the sweep on the weekend but were denied by a late goal by Team SW with 30 seconds left for a 4-3 loss Sunday. TW goes 2-1 on the weekend and now are 6-6 in league play.
Nice Job guys.
So YOU Wanna Play Junior Hockey ?
Its tough enough making a squad in the NAHL. But the initiation of a rookie by his veteran teammates can be amusing. Recently a couple of teams that I know of had their rookie initiation. Rookies had to dress up as girls and be seen in public at the mall and dinner. Now I know some guys played it out and gave their teammates a good laugh, and even helps as an icebreaker with new teammates.
"We all knew the day was coming," said Shayne McLaughlin of the Springfield Jr. Blues. Shayne admits he never dressed like that before, "So you kinda suck it up and have fun with it." So the review came in on his initiation. "I have no feminine side at all," laughed Shayne.
Denver's got talent on the ice, not in singing.
Former Janesville Bluebird Daniel Olszewski, who is beginning his freshman season at DU, was recently found on the letsgodu blogspot, singing the school fight song in front of the students who were waiting in line for tickets. He and a fellow rookie were the only ones who sang it as part of a tradition. It is on the blogspot way down for your listening enjoyment. Olszewski, in his freshman debut, had a goal in a 8-1 romp over USNTDP U18 squad.
