Kison and Stow shine in 3-1 win over Cap City

The duo of Ava Kison and Abigail Stow for the Eau Claire Area Stars was too much for the Cap City Cougars to handle on Saturday in the Championship game of Girls State Tournament. Kison tallied two goals and Stow scored the other as the Stars claimed the crown with a 3-1 win.

A fast-paced first period with very few whistles was finally interrupted when Abigail Stow drove in from the right side and fired a shot on net. Cougar goalie Taylor Thornton stopped the shot, but the rebound came right to the stick of Ava Kison who fired it into the back of the net for a 1-0 Stars lead.

With Amanda Bauer in the penalty box “for a hook,” Colleen Milligan blocked a shot and fed a pass to Zephryn Jagar, who had gotten behind the Stars defense. Jagar took off down the center of the ice and beat Stars goalie Naomi Stow high over the glove hand to tie the game at one each.
Stow stopped three shots in the first period, while on the other end of the ice, Thornton blocked 7 shots.

Six minutes into the second period, Kison fired a shot into Thornton’s  chest and the puck dropped at her feet. Stow was there to poke the puck between Thornton’s feet, but the referee had already blown his whistle, thinking that Thornton was holding the puck.

A minute later Kison and Stow came back down on a two on one, Stow passed to Kison who fired a shot that ricocheted off the right post, and then the left post, and back out front. From there, Camille Baker took off down the center of the ice all alone on Naomi Stow, who came up with a great blocker save.

Naomi Stow stopped another three shots in the second period, and Thornton stopped all eleven thrown her way.

Five and a half minutes into the third period, Lauren Carmody fired a slapshot from the top of the right circle. The rebound bounced right into the wheelhouse of Abigail Stow, who deposited the puck into the back of the Cougars net, putting the Stars up 2-1.

Kison added to that lead with just about five minutes to play in the period when she roofed a backhand shot from in close. The Cougars pulled their goalie with two and a half minutes to play, and mounted some good pressure on the Stars end, but could not score again.

Naomi Stow stopped nine shots in the game, while Taylor Thornton stopped 24.
