Maria Griffiths Second Goal of Season is HUGE

Game comes down to final seconds

The second meeting of the season between the Cougars and Tigers had a little bit of everything. The two teams met in Sun Prairie on January 25th, where Black River Falls escaped with a 2-1 victory. The winner of this game would move one step closer to the state tournament.

The first period moved at a fast pace. The Cougars gained the early lead on a goal by Colleen Milligan with Zephryn Jager and Amanda Bauer assisting at 10:24 of the period. Josie Mathison finished the period with 11 saves for the Tigers, while Taylor Thorton had 7 saves for Cap City.

The Tigers tied the game at 3:08 of the second, when Baileigh Johnson scored an unassisted goal. Black River Falls took over the lead as Savannah Holcomb assisted on Alli Zilmer's goal at 6:20. Cap City tied the game 18 seconds later during a scramble in front of the net. Amanda Bauer scored the goal with Zephryn Jager and Montana Cruz assisting. The period concluded with the game tied at 2. Thornton collected 3 more saves in the period and Mathison stopped 4.

Cap City took advantage of a turnover in the Tigers' defensive zone and vaulted into the lead. Maria Griffiths shot the puck on goal, as she was falling over a Black River Falls defender, and it found the twine behind Mathison at 10:33 of the 3rd period. The Cougars thought they clinched the game with 10 seconds remaining in the period. However, after the goal was announced the officials met and determined there was a delayed offsides call. They waved the goal off and had the clock reset to 11 seconds. The Cougars were assessed with a bench minor and had an assistant coach ejected from the game prior to the face-off moving the face-off inside the Cap City defensive zone. Cap City won the face-off and killed off the final 11 seconds to advance to the sectional final with a 3-2 victory.
