Baraboo/Portage Rides Fast Start to Win

Baraboo/Portage Outshoot Sparta 50-24

The Thunderbirds entered the game having lost 8 of their last 10 games. Sparta entered the game with 13 skaters and 2 goaltenders.

Baraboo/Portage opened the scoring at 1:10 of the first period on an unassisted goal by Mike Wech. The lead was increased to 2 as the Thunderbirds capitalized on a power play at the 10:14 mark. This time Jack Macdonald scored with Mike Wech and Jack Rath assisting. Brenton Gunderson scored another power play goal for Baraboo/Portage assisted by George Fitzwilliams and Gabe Larson with 4:01 left in the period. The final goal of the first period was scored by Evan Goethal assisted by Cameron Logan and Campbell Koseor with 1:19 showing on the clock. The period concluded with Baraboo/Portage leading 4-0.

Cameron Logan increase the lead to 5, when he scored at 1:39 of the second with Koseor and Fitzwilliams assisting. The Spartans busted into the scoring column as Quaden Baird and Derrick Page assisted on an acrobatic goal by Jack Steinhoff with 9:12 remaining in the period. The puck went into the net followed by Steinhoff as he flew over Dane Hinz. End of 2 periods, Thunderbirds 5 Spartans 1.

Jack Macdonald picked up his second goal of the game with a shot from the goal line to the right of Sparta's Nathan Thompson just behind the crossbar at 11:20 of the third. Mike Wech and Joe Zemanovic assisted on the play. Sparta's Riley Peterson closed out the scoring 50 seconds later with Steinhoff and Baird assisting. The Thunderbirds advance to the sectional semi-finals with a 6-2 victory.

Baraboo/Portage will play rival RWD at the R.A.C.A. in Reedsburg on Thursday, February 15 at 7:00 PM. The Thunderbirds will attempt to turn the table on the Cheavers, who won both conference games against Baraboo/Portage this season.
