Tightly contested game makes for exciting win

Derek Pawlak scores 2 goals enroute to RWD win

The Badger North Conference title was on the line Tuesday evening as RWD hosted Waunakee in Reedsburg.  Waunakee and Reedsburg (as Reedsburg, BRH or RWD) each entered the game having won 6 conference titles. The winner of the game would be taking home their 7th title. The Warriors entered the game with a 6-1-1 conference record, while RWD sported a 7-1-0 record.

RWD tallied the first goal at 4:17 of the first period. Jacob Ely started the play with an outlet pass to Dylan Brown from RWD's defensive zone. Brown attacked the offensive zone to the left of Waunakee's Hunter Beck. Brown passed the puck cross-ice to Derek Pawlak and Pawlak redirected it into the goal. The Warriors tied the game with 4:37 remaining in the period. Keegan Ripley fired a shot onto the RWD goal from inside the blue line, where it was tipped into the net by Kurt Johnson. The period ended with the game tied at 1.

RWD reclaimed the lead in the second period at the 8:54 mark. Jon Zobel started the play for RWD with a pass to Dylan Brown. Brown passed the puck to Derek Pawlak and Pawlak collected his second goal of the evening. RWD led 2-1 at the end of two.

The third period continued to see both teams putting every ounce of energy on every play. Ben Jones defensive pressure on Waunakee as they tried to clear the puck from their end of the ice forced a turnover. Jones fed the puck to Dylan Brown and Brown slid the biscuit past Beck to complete the scoring with 4:45 remaining in the game. Waunakee's Hunter Beck finished the game with 23 saves, while Nick Bruenig had 33 saves for RWD.
