Hudson wins for second time against Wildcats

It was the second close game between two of the state’s top ranked teams.  It was also the Hudson girls hockey team’s second straight victory over the University School co-op team.  The Raiders defeated the Wildcats 3-1 on January 27th at the Hudson Sports and Civic Center rink.

Earlier in the month Hudson defeated USM 3-2 in a close game in Milwaukee.

“Hudson is a good team.  Once again, we competed with them.  I thought we played well at times, but against a team like that you have bring your full game,” said Dan Carey, USM’s head coach. “We know we’re good enough.  We hope to play them again in March.”

The pace of Friday’s game was fast, and the players moved from end to end.  The Raiders showed their strength as they outshot the Wildcats 26-14 in the clash.

Hudson scored the game’s first goal early in the opening period.  The Raider’s leading scorer, senior Anna Wilgren snapped up a loose puck in center ice and headed in to the Wildcats’ zone.  She cut to the right then, as she approached the net, she curved back toward the center and fired a shot past Juliana Strother, the Wildcats’ senior goaltender.  Time of the goal 3:34.

The Wildcats tied the score later in the period.  Senior Megan McPike began to skate the puck out of the Wildcats’ end.  She spotted senior Abby Hentzen speeding ahead and pushed the puck ahead of her.  Hentzen got it and raced side by side with a backchecker toward the Hudson goal.  Nearing the net, the defender knocked Hentzen aside.  As she fell, Hentzen lofted a shot past Cassie Schultz, Hudson’s senior goalie, at 10:11.

Hudson went ahead on a controversial goal midway through the second period.  Wilgren carried the puck down the right boards of the Wildcats’ zone.  She centered the puck toward the crease to Bailee Dierks.  The puck hit off Dierks and went in.  The Wildcats claimed she had kicked the puck in (inadmissible video evidence later confirmed it). The goal at 7:54 stood.

Hudson finished the scoring at 9:37 of the third period.  Taking a faceoff in the Hudson left corner, senior Natalie Miller won the draw to senior Angela Huepfel.  Huepfel whipped the puck around the boards to sophomore Greta Mohrland.  Mohrland sped down the right side.  As she moved into the right circle in the Wildcats’ end, she fired a shot past Strother to clinch the victory for the Raiders.

The second-ranked Raiders are now 18-2.  They play another tough opponent, the St. Croix Valley Fusion, on Tuesday, January 30th at the Hudson Sports and Civic Center at 6:00 p.m.

The fourth-ranked Wildcats take their 14-6 record to the Baldwin United Civic Center in River Falls to. face the third-ranked Fusion in a non-conference contest at noon on Saturday January 27th.
