Wanted: Team stats and records

WI HS hockey has limited records and stats

Wisconsin Prep Hockey morphed into its current iteration for the 2009-10 season, converting from mostly text only for the prior eight seasons. We did not have a database during those early seasons, so stats were saved much like memory on a computer: here today, but gone when you shut it off.

The first couple seasons had a bunch of the teams entering stats, but not all. As the years have progressed, teams have come to the conclusion that it is a benefit to enter scores and stats.

But even in 2018, not everybody enters scores and stats, and we have to prod a little bit to get that done.

That brings me to a request from a fan: he wanted to know how many goalies have won 50 games in his or her career.

Ashamedly, I had to tell him, "I don't know."

So, using the All-State team listings and the limited stats listings, I came up with five netminders that earned 50 victories or more. But I am nowhere near finished.

I know that there are goalies that played between 1970 and 2010 that won more than 50 games. But I have no way of finding that information out.

I surfed the web and found a website that allows searching of newspaper archives for years gone by. But unless you know exactly what you are looking for, it is hard to find.

So, I am making this request: each team appoint an 'archiver' that compiles stats for the history of that team.

Basketball and football teams have stats and records going back to the 1940s and 1950s for their respective sports. There is no excuse that hockey can't have the same for the last 40 years or so.

If each team can have a person tally up the historical stats for each team, that would go a long way towards legitimizing our sport. Since we are already WIAA's 'red-headed stepchild,' we need to work that much harder to become a 'real sport.'

I would please ask that a team rep gather stats and records for each team. This would require lots of research, but would be beneficial to both the team and the sport in the long run.

So, if each team could have a coach, fan, or parent to do a little digging, that would help a long way in trying to make our sport 'complete.'

Thank you in advance for improving Wisconsin high school hockey.

NOTE: Mike Sullivan, Eau Claire hockey guru extraordinaire, told me that a couple resources that proved invaluable to him were school yearbooks and former players. The yearbooks could have team records and players might have scrapbooks that could provide lots of info via newspaper articles and such.
