Cap City earns 4-2 win over Fox Cities

SUN PRAIRIE -  The Lady Stars have come to a difficult stretch in their schedule as they look to finish the season strong. Coming off a 3-3 draw on Monday, the Stars headed to Sun Prairie to take on the Cap City Cougars for another non-conference tilt.

In their past few games, Fox Cities has had to play from behind as the first period has not been too kind to them. Saturday was no exception, as a two-goal deficit in the first period was simply too much for them to overcome as they fell to the Cougars 4-2.

Early in the game, things appeared to be evenly matched as both teams had their fair share of control of the game. Taylor Thornton and Hattie Berndt were strong in goal early as we had a scoreless game half through the opening period. It was at the midway point in the opening period when everything changed, and momentum swung heavily in the Cougars favor.

With both teams at even strength and approaching nine minutes to go in the first, it was Cap City opening the scoring. Margo Thousand picked up the first goal taking it unassisted for the 1-0 lead. Things went from bad to worse for the Stars. Just 17 seconds later, the Cougars found themselves on the attack once again. This time it was Thousand picking up an assist on the play as she played the puck Cami Baker to double the lead 2-0. The Cougars wouldn’t look back as they took that two-goal advantage into the second period.

In dire need of some offense, the Stars began to pick up the pace in the second period outshooting the Cougars 12-8 in the process. Unfortunately, Thornton continued to dominate between the posts keeping most of the shots out of the goal. Fox Cities was finally able to break through midway through the second period. With an even strength situation, it was the deadly duo of Lauryn Hull and Madelynn Jablonski leading an attack. Jablonski saw an opportunity to play the puck and perfectly placed it to Hull who finished it home. That cut the deficit in half, but the Stars still trailed after two periods of play.

It was in the third period when both offenses found pay dirt again, but this time it was Cap City turning the momentum yet again. The Cougars thoroughly dominated the final period of play powering 10 shots on goal while the defense relaxed to give up just four. Once again, it wasn’t until the midway point of the period when the next goal would come.

It was Colleen Milligan’s turn to get in on the action blasting home another even strength goal which proved to be the eventual game winner. Still searching for more offense, the Cougars were back at it again nearly four minutes later. Carson Sheridan delivered the knockout blow taking the Zephryn Jager assist to give Cap City their largest lead of the game 4-1.

Fox Cities would not go down with out a fight as they continued to battle until the end. 39 seconds after the Cougars scored their fourth and final goal, it was the Stars turn to light up the lamp. With Jablonski leading the attack once more, she would pick up her second assist of the game as Alaina Schauf put it to make it a 4-2 game. That would be as close as things would get as the Cougars picked up the solid home victory.
