Senior forward scores four times in win

Markie Ash scored all four goals in Wisconsin Valley Union’s 4-1 victory over the University School co-op in girls’ hockey action in the second game of the Ticket King Girls Hockey Classic played Saturday, January 6th at USM.

Ash scored her first goal in the first period.  Shelby Tryba chipped the puck to her near the center red line.  Ash made a move that mesmerized a Wildcat defenseman then broke away.  She sped into the Wildcats’ end and launched a wrist shot past Juliana Strother, the Wildcats’ goaltender at 7:22.

The Wildcats re-tied the game late in the period.  Megan McPike got the puck on the right mid-boards in the Wildcats’ zone, raced past a defender, and headed down the boards in the Union end.  She cut toward the net and tried to deke Pistol Cowden, WVU’s goalie.  The puck rebounded out to defenseman Michaela Fritz in the high slot.  Fritz whizzed a shot into the net at 14:41.

Ash scored a short-handed goal at 9:02 of the second period. Kendra Robinson got the puck in the Union’s end and gunned a clearing shot off the right boards.  Ash roared past a defenseman to get it and raced in on a breakaway. She scored on a low shot from the left side of the net after deking Strother.

Ash rang up a hat trick a few minutes later.  Tryba cleared the puck out of the WVU zone and Alayna Bruneau got it in center ice.  She skated in, deked a defenseman, and headed to the Wildcats’ net.  Strother stopped her, but the rebound popped to the side. Ash, who was skating in, got the loose puck on the edge of the crease and shoveled it into the goal at 15:53.

Ash scored her fourth goal on a power play midway through the third period.  Skating into the USM zone, Robinson made a quick stop near the blue line.  She passed the puck to Ash as Ash came across the line.  Ash fired a low shot into the net at 7:30 to finalize the game’s scoring and give WVU the victory.

WVU is now 10-1-1.  The team takes on the Fox Cities Stars in a game at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, January 8th at the Tri-County Arena in Neenah.

USM is 11-4.  The Wildcats play the Central Wisconsin Storm in a non-conference game on Saturday, January 13th at USM at 1:00 pm.
