Edgewood and Notre Dame battle to a tie

This week's Wisconsin Prep Hockey Game of the Week featured two teams who could've possibly played last weekend at the Showdown in Titletown.

But it didn't happen.

Instead Notre Dame and Edgewood met Saturday and  played a similar game and after it was all settled a 3-3 tie was the outcome at LaBahn Ice in Madison.

The first period looked like it was gonna end up scoreless but Notre Dame scored with eight-tenths of a second on a shot that slipped past Edgewood goalie Ben Cegelski. The goal was credited to Jacob Conrad and it gave NDA a 1-0 lead into first intermission. Shots in the period were 6-2 Tritons.

The second period saw both teams wanting to get up and down the ice quickly. But both goalies were stubborn and defenses limited shots. Finally NDA got a 2-0 lead on a goal by Matt Kini just as a power play was expiring.

Any momentum NDA had was taken back quickly. Jake Schmaltz scored his first of two goals to cut it to 2-1 thru two periods.

Edgewood came out in the third period on a power play but didn't convert. However, Quinn Friedow was able to get a puck at the left circle and shot a wrist shot past NDA goalie Bo Buckley stick side for a 2-2 tie.

The two teams tightened up their play and NDA was able to break through on a Mike Gregoire goal for a 3-2 lead with over seven minutes left.

NDA looked to shut things down but Edgewood was able to tie things up on Schmaltz's second goal of the game for 3-all tie with over three minutes to go.

Neither team could get the other to blink the rest of the regulation. Overtime was required and in the OT NDA was awarded a power play. They were able to get shots but the Edgewood penalty killers were able to hold off the scoring chances with Cegelski stellar during it. Neither team scored and the game ended in a 3-3 tie. Both teams had chances but neither could crack thru in overtime.

Both Edgewood's Cegelski and Notre Dame's Buckley were credited with 29 saves.
