Tight Rivalry Game Finds RWD On Top

Baraboo/Portage traveled to Lake Delton and took on Reedsburg/Wisconsin Dells/Mauston at Poppy Waterman Ice Arena in Badger North Conference play. Both teams sat a half game out of first place in the conference standings.

The Thunderbirds tallied the first goal at the 4 minute mark of the first period, when Jack Macdonald scored with an assist from Gabe D'Asto. RWD answered 20 seconds later on a goal by Ben Horzewski with Thomas Pfaff and Reid Marsich assisting on the play. RWD took the lead with 8:15 remaining in the period on a goal by Dylan Brown with Derek Pawlak and Austin Conroy being credited with assists. The period concluded with RWD leading 2-1.

Baraboo/Portage tied the game scoring at the 4 minute mark for the second period in a row. This time it was Cameron Logan and Evan Goethel assisting on Gabe Larson's goal. MIke Wech put Baraboo/Portage back into the lead converting a 5-on-3 power play goal with Joe Zemanovic and Campbell Koseor assisting at 14:10 of the second period. RWD countered with a 5-on-3 power play goal of their own with 31.7 seconds left in the second period as Dylan Brown scored with Ben Horzewski and Austin Conroy assisting. The score at the end of two, RWD 3 Baraboo/Portage 3.

RWD scored the lone goal of the third period with 7:15 showing on the clock. Derek Pawlak and Dylan Brown beat the defenders down the ice. One of the Baraboo/Portage defenders hustled back trying to defend the pass from Pawlak to Brown near the low slot area. The puck was tipped into the net with Brown being credited with the goal and Pawlak with the assist. RWD won the contest 4-3. Dane Hinz finished the game with 39 saves for the Thunderbirds. Nicolas Breunig had 26 saves in the win for RWD.

The two teams will meet again on February 1st in Baraboo. However, the next games on their schedule finds Baraboo/Portage hosting Sauk Prairie on Tuesday, January 9th. RWD will host West Salem on Saturday, January 6th.
