Balanced Attack Leads Cougars to Victory

Viroqua opportunities limited by Cap City Defense

Viroqua traveled to Waunakee taking on the Cap City Cougars. The Cougars' fans wanted to see how their team would handle their second heartbreaking loss of the season. Cap City opened the season with a 5-4 loss to the Warbirds and coming off a 2-1 loss to the Fury. The Blackhawks came to "The Ice Pond" off a victory over the Metro Lynx and wanting to prove they are a contender for the Badger Conference title.

Cap City lit the lamp early in the first period, when Elise Olson put the puck in the net with an assist from Mack Rosin ath the 2:54 mark. Colleen Milligan stretched the lead to two with an assist from Zephryn Jager to finishe the first period scoring with 9:21 showing on the clock. The Cougars' Taylor Thornton finished the period with 4 saves, while Ivy Shonka had 12 saves for the Blackhawks.

Eight minutes into the second period, Carson Sheridan increased the Cougars' lead to three with Margo Thousand and Brynna Banuelos assisting. Viroqua's Perla Grenier cut into the deficit at 14:51 of the second period with Emma Kolden being credited with the assist. Shonka stopped 13 shots in the period. Thornton had 6 saves.

Colleen Milligan assisted on Amanda Bauer's goal 19 seconds into the third period.  Fatigue caught up with the Blackhawks in the final period and they struggled to clear the puck from their defensive zone. The Cougars were able to tighten their pressure and limit Viroqua's offense to one shot on goal in the final period. Margo Thousand completed the scoring in the game at 9:09 of the period with an unassisted goal. Ivy Shonka picked up 23 saves in the period for a total of 48. Taylor Thornton saw 1 shot on goal in the period and finished with 11 saves for the game.
