Glacier freezes out Wildcats 6-4

Hadley Malcolmson scored four goals and had two assists to lead the Brookfield Glacier girls hockey team to a 6-4 victory over the University School co-op in the championship game of the USM Girls Hockey Classic Tournament on Saturday, December 9th at USM.

“We did not play well,” said USM’s head coach Dan Carey.  “it was our worst game of the season by far.”

Malcolmson scored the first goal in the non-conference game just 4:32 into the game.  She picked up a loose puck along the left boards in center ice and out skated a defenseman as she headed into the Wildcats’ zone.  She closed in on Juliana Strother, the Wildcats’ goaltender then lifted a shot past her giving the Glacier a lead they would never surrender.

The Glacier went ahead 2-0 just over two minutes later.  Malcolmson passed the puck to Lizzy Doan who was skating along the boards in center ice.  Doan chipped it to the middle to Taelyn Bintzler who skated into the Wildcats’ zone and fired a shot past Strother at 6:42.

A power play goal at 13:31 gave the Glacier a commanding 3-0 first period lead. Malcolmson got the puck in the left corner of the Wildcats’ zone and skated behind the net.  As she came out the other side, she passed the puck out front to Zoe Sterberg who snapped a shot into the net.

The Glacier increased their lead early in the second period. A Wildcat defenseman misplayed a puck chipped by Kayleigh Schmor into center ice.  It skipped into the Wildcats zone.  Malcolmson out raced the defenseman for it.  She swung toward the net from the left and fired an off angle shot that beat Strother at 5:12.

The Wildcats showed some signs of life seconds after falling behind 4-0.  Megan McPike picked a loose puck off the right boards in center ice and skated toward the Glacier zone.  She swirled past a defender and headed down the slot.  She gunned a short shot past Kristin Woodcock, the Glacier goalie, at 5:25.

The Glacier made it 5-1 at 14:50 of the period.  Breaking out of the Glacier zone, Maddy Rudella skated along the right boards.  In center ice, she fired a cross ice pass to Malcolmson who out hustled a defenseman, moved in on the USM net and buried another shot for her hat trick.

The Wildcats responded to their coach’s exhortations to get their game in gear minutes later.  Jordan Bonk grabbed a puck that Maggie Meissner passed off the boards in the USM end.  Bonk sped past the Glacier defenseman and headed in on a breakaway.  She successfully fired a shot past Woodcock at 16:30.

Malcolmson scored her fourth goal of the game on a breakaway at 1:22 of the third period, giving the Glacier a 6-2 lead.

The Wildcats made it 6-3 a little over two minutes later.  Forechecking in the Glacier end, Bonk went after a defender behind the net and won the battle for the puck.  She passed it out front to Jenna Klenz who swiftly buried a shot in the net at 3:40.

The Wildcats scored one final goal on a power play in the final seconds of the game.  Libby Hennelly stopped the puck at the blue line and fired it at Woodcock.  The rebound came straight out to Michaela Fritz in the low slot. Fritz bashed it under Woodcock at 16:47.

After the game, the USM captains commented. Fritz said, “It was a disappointing loss. Everyone was hoping to win the game, but our energy and compete levels were non-existent. We are all aware of our mistakes and are looking forward to the next game we play them.

Lexie Epperson agreed, adding, “Also there was a lack of teamwork, and we failed to implement our systems, which lead to a breakdown in our game. There were good parts of the game but we beat ourselves and allowed them to get opportunities.”

The two wins in the tournament improved Brookfield’s record to 2-4 and 0-2 in the Eastern Shores Conference.  The Glacier try to improve their record even more when they take on the Lakeshore Lightning in a conference matchup at 5:00 p.m. on Friday, December 15th at the Ponds in Brookfield.

USM is 6-2 and 2-0 in the Eastern Shores Conference. The Wildcats play the Fox Cities Stars in an Eastern Shores Conference game on Tuesday, December 12th at USM.
