The time has come for a new high school hockey season to begin and as it has been since 2001, Wisconsin Prep Hockey (WiPH) will be there to provide team pages, schedules, results, stats, and pictures that record the four-odd months of that campaign for the sake of posterity.
During the seasons, we do our best to pass along guidance to those who need it, and sometimes to those who don't. We try to get everyone up to speed, and although it make take a few weeks, our team admins usually do a pretty good job.
A couple key tasks to be completed prior to the start of the season are entering game schedules and roster information.
Both are fairly straightforward and instructions for both can be found to the right of this text in the sidebar.
Here are some tips for both to make your page pop.
For schedules, the keys are to make sure conference/non-conference game info is entered, along with rink information. Info on how to do both are included in the instructions for entering schedules, or as they would say in Canuckland, 'shed-yules.'
Roster administration is a little more involved, but once you get it down pat, it's pretty simple.
Make sure you enter all the coaching information, including head coach email address. And DO NOT forget to include the names of the hard-working assistants! Without them, the team goes nowhere.
For players, make sure to upload 'mugshots' for all players! Kinda boring when your page has no pics...and I'm sure the players are bummed, too. I've already had players send me their pics so I could post it. So get those added.
One key tip: crop the pics so they look like THIS, not like THIS. Why would I care about the uniform? When taking the picture, focus on the mugshot-type pic. When you crop, it will not blur, and your player's handsome/pretty face will shine through.
I want to see as much of the face as I can. Crop the pics just outside the head on all sides, and you'll end up with a nice mugshot!
Another thing: in the GRAD YEAR text field, put the year, not the grade in school. The grad year never changes—well, it shouldn't—but you never know. So the numbers you should see this year are either 2018, 2019, 2020, or 2021.
And if all goes well on this planet, the Zager and Evans song 'In the Year 2525' might come true and my great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great grandson might be telling his generation's team admins the same thing, just with a different year, and life would be good.
That leaves entering stats for games.
The home team is responsible for adding stats for BOTH teams. If the game is a tournament game at a neutral site, the coaches can decide who will enter stats.
There are two methods: live scoring during the game, or entering the scoring data after the game. I've done both many times, and either one works.
Clicking on SCORE LIVE allows you to enter the game either way. I used to enter game stats while manning the announcing booth, spinning tunes, and keeping the scoresheet (all at the same time), so it is pretty simple.
If you elect to enter the stats after the game, use the scoresheet to enter game rosters and then go 'event by event.' An event refers to goals, assists, penalties, and goalie info. Follow the instructions shown to the right in the sidebar and you will be a pro in no time.
So there you have it. If your team needs a team admin, have someone create an account on this site and follow directions for confirming, etc, and let us know that we need to add them as team admins.
All of us at WiPH have done this stuff many times, so get in touch with any of us if you need help.
Good luck on the season, and make your team page be the envy of your conference!
