Rock County earns 8-4 win over defending state champs

Sometimes in sports, the main thing is to 'answer' when your opponent makes a score.

On a rainy, dreary, pre-Deer Season eve in central Wisconsin, the Rock County Fury certainly did that, tallying a pair of goals on four different occasions to upset the Central Wisconsin Storm 8-4 Friday night at the Greenheck Fieldhouse Ice Arena.

The Fury scored first on Maggie Henschler's first of four scores on her foray down the left side which ended with the puck behind Chloe Westberg just over six minutes into the first period.

Rock County upped the score to 2-0 with just over four minutes left when Dani Heitsman took a pass off a steal and fired a rocket past a screened Westberg to give the Fury a two-goal lead.

Not to be outdone, the Storm cut the lead to 2-1 when Eden Gruber clanked one off the right post while finishing a 2-on-1 break with 1:40 left in the first.

The Fury scored the first two goals in the middle period to take a three-goal lead.

Henschler got her second goal on a shot from the right circle through traffic that trickled past the Storm goalie to make it 3-1. Zoie Steig earned her second helper on the play.

After an unsuccessful Fury power play, Rock County scored while both teams were at full strength.

Freshman Alyssa Knauf grabbed a loose puck and skated left to right across the slot and as she was being dragged down by a Storm defender, whipped the puck past the Storm netminder to make it 4-1, Fury.

Then, in a span of 69 seconds, the home team scored twice to cut the lead to 4-3.

With just under four minutes left in the stanza, Kenna Bailey tapped in a rebound before Kristin Deffner fired a shot from the left circle that beat Fury goalie McKaylie Buescher to cut the lead to one goal.

A minute later, Henschler stole the puck and came in on a semi-breakaway, lifting the puck over the goalie's left pad to make it 5-3, Fury, which is how the period ended.

A couple minutes into the final period, the Storm went on the power play and put good pressure on the Fury PK unit, but the visitors killed off the penalty, despite a pair of good scoring chances.

The Fury bumped the lead to 6-3 with Cammi Ganshert's score from the slot that snuck through traffic with just under 11 minutes left in the final frame.

A minute later, Rock County took a penalty and this time the Storm would convert to narrow the lead to two goals.

Emelia Edmondson found a loose puck in the slot and scored to make it 6-4 midway through the period.

Kassidy Oliva almost cut the lead to one a couple minutes later, but her shot clanged off the crossbar as the Storm finished killing off a penalty.

As time ticked down, the Storm pulled Westberg off for an extra attacker, but the guests scored twice as Steig and Henschler put empty netters in to account for the 8-4 final.

In addition to the goals, Steig notched a pair of helpers for the Fury, while Kiley Hahner, number 36 on tonight's scorecard, added two assists for the Storm.

Both Buescher and Westberg stopped 25 pucks in the contest.
