Fun with Numbers

We use the USHSHO Power Rankings to chart teams through the year.

We're all aware that computerized rankings aren't gospel (just ask the BCS), but they can do a great job of ranking teams while avoiding some of the biases that human voters have when creating their own rankings polls.

US High School Hockey Online has been providing computerized rankings since 1997, and have included Wisconsin in those rankings since 2000.

Jeff Rochon, an assistant coach at Arrowhead, went through the Power Rankings archives back to December 20 and graphed the progress of the team's in each section. He also ran the numbers on the sections themselves.

The individual sectional graphs are available at the bottom of this page in the photo gallery, or in the PDF on the right.  The sectional group data is below.

Some highlights:

  • Section 6 is the toughest section in the state. Middleton, Madison Edgewood, Monona Grove, Verona, Oregon and Waunakee all rank 22 or higher in the USHSHO rankings.
  • The top five teams in the USHSHO rankings are all in different sections, and could meet in the state tournament.
  • Green Bay United ranked 6th by USHSHO is the top team that doesn't lead their sectional.
