The champions have been crowned, but what transpired this season?

Thank you for the memories

Saturday, March 4th, saw the Central Wisconsin Storm and Hudson Raiders crowned as the 2016-17 WIAA State Hockey champions.  I enjoy covering the high school hockey season from November through the state tournament for multiple reasons.  One it helps make the winter go by faster, but more importantly I enjoy watching these young men and women grow throughout the season and over their career.

The state tournament crowns a champion, but lost in it many times is the heartbreak numerous players endure as their title dreams come to an end.  After the game is over, I hope they take the time to reflect and see what a great season they had.  It may have ended in Madison or earlier in the playoffs, but you made many memories all season long and these will be with you forever.  If this was your final season playing high school hockey, hopefully you have many fond memories throughout your career.  Those that still have time remaining, please take the time to enjoy the time with teammates and your classmates as your senior teammates will tell you “it goes by quicker than you can ever imagine.

The first games I attended this season were at the Girls Early Bird Tournament in Waupun featuring:  Appleton United; the Fond du Lac Warbirds; Northland Pines Eagles and the Stoughton Icebergs.  There many games in between, mostly girls high school games on my part with one varsity game on the boys’ side.  Players, fans and coaches have always made us feel welcome at the games.  As much as we would love to see every team play, it just isn’t possible to make them all.

Michael, MJ, Bill (and his photographer Bob) and I take numerous pictures during the season.  The slideshow has some of the photos from this season.

In conclusion, “Thank you to all the players, coaches and fans for making it an enjoyable season.“
