Special teams lead Cardinals over Pirates 3-2

Special teams were the story of the game as four of the five goals came with the man advantage, as the Sun Prairie Cardinals edged the Bay Port Pirates 3-2 in the second quarter-final game on Thursday afternoon.

Late in the first period, with Spencer Kring in the penalty box for slashing, Sun Prairie capitalized with a power play goal. Travis Kernan put a shot on goal from the left side that Riley Baye stopped and kicked to the right. Kyle Hagerman was there to grab the rebound and bury it in the back of the net.

Baye made 11 saves in the first period while Sun Prairie goalie Sam Dunn stopped all 10 shots he saw.

Just 35 seconds into the second period, Alex Kurtz took a pass from Noah Nehmer and put the Cardinals up 2-0.

The Pirates got their power play going halfway through the period. With a five on three advantage, Joe Cavil knocked in a rebound off a shot by Spencer Challe. That brought one Cardinal out of the box. Less than a minute later, Max Moore redirected a shot from Austin Mikesch to tie the score at two each.

Dunn had a very busy second period, stopping 18 of the 20 shots taken by the Cardinals. Baye stopped 7 of 8 for the Pirates.

Just when it looked like this game was going to go into overtime, the Sun Prairie power play cashed in again. The Cardinals got the puck into the Pirates zone and kept the pressure on, finally getting the puck to the front of the net where Chris Rowles was finally able to poke it past Baye with just 14 seconds left on the clock.
