It took 70 minutes 8 seconds, but we have a Sectional Three Champion

Fury outshot by Cougars 41 to 19

The hardest thing about the sectionals is one team has to go home and the other advances.  The sectional three final in Sun Praire is a game neither team will forget.  The Fury were looking for their second trip to the state semifinals, after having been there last year.  The Cougars hadn't been to the state semifinals since 2011.

The first period could not have been any closer.  Neither team was called for a penalty, but nor could they find a way to get the puck past the goalie. Both goaltenders, Taylor Thornton (Sun Prairie) and  McKaylie Buescher (Rock County), had 5 saves at the end of the first period.

The Fury were able to jump to a 1-0 lead as Meghan McCarthy score with an assist from Anne Runde at 2:53 of the second period.  The Cougars came back and tied the game at 7:51, when Mack Rosin scored a power play goal with Carson Sheridan and Zephryn Jager being credited with assists.  The period ended with the game knotted at 1.

Rock County took advantage of a power play opportunity in the third period.  Zoie Steig scored the goal at 4:54 with and assist from Meghan McCarthy.  The Fury clung to their one goal lead heading into the end of the third period.  Sun Prairie had Thornton empty the net and head to the bench with a little over 1 minute remaining in regulation and had their extra attacker take the ice.  Margo Thousand tied the game with 41.7 seconds remaining on the clock as she was falling to the ice and slid it past Buescher.  Annika Johnson and Jada Ward assisted on the goal.  The regulation time concluded with the game tied at 2.

Neither team scored in the 8 minute overtime and the game went into the 17 minute overtime.  The players from both teams were exhausted and you could tell the legs were starting to get heavier as the period grew longer.  Sun Prairie's Margo Thousand took a shot and it deflected off the body of Jada Ward into the net, for Sun Prairie to advance to the state semifinals on Friday, with 5:52 remaining on the clock.

The Cougars won the opportunity to represent sectional three at Veteran's Memorial Coliseum on Friday, March 3rd at approximately 2:30 PM.  Their opponent will be the Central Wisconsin Storm.
