West Salem to make first trip to state

For the first time ever, the West Salem Panther hockey team is marching its way to the state tournament in Madison after a 5-2 sectional final win last night.

"They deserve this" head coach Eric Borre said after the win. "It's obviously cool for the program but these kids worked so hard this year and that's what is important to us right now."

The Panthers started fast, scoring just six minutes in. Senior Nathan Belling found the back of the net on a rebound after junior forwards Joseph Oldendorf and Jack Gorniak couldn't bury their initial attempts.

The Panthers controlled play the rest of the way in the period, getting quality looks throughout. Goaltender Mitch Hammes had to make a couple of saves, including a big one from his back to keep it 1-0.

With just seven seconds remaining in the period however, RWD's leading scorer Dylan Brown tied the game at one on a give and go.
