16 teams remain, who will advance

Fifty-one minutes barring overtime are what remain in the season for eight teams.  Eight will advance to Madison to being quarterfinal play on Thursday, March 2nd.  What seeds remain?  Could we have all 8 number 1 seeds make the trip to Mad City?

Sectional One

#2 Superior Spartans vs #1 Hudson Raiders
Location:  Gornick Arena
When:  Saturday, February 25 at 2:00 PM

Recent history for Hudson and Superior
Hudson won on their home ice 3-2 on January 21st.  Three days later, the teams played in Superior and the game ended in a 1-1 tie.

Post Season
2016 - #1 Hudson advanced to state losing in the state title game 2-1.  #6 Superior lost in the regional finals to #3 Somerset.
2015 - #2 Superior defeated #1 Hudson in the sectional final.  Superior went on to win the state title.
2014 - #4 Superior defeated #1 Hudson in the sectional semifinals.  Superior won the sectional and lost in the quarterfinals at state.
2013 - #1 Superior defeate #3 Hudson in overtime in the sectional final.  Superior lost in the state semifinals.
2012 - #1 Superior advanced to state where they lost in the quarterfinals.  #3 Hudson lost to #2 New Richmond in the sectional semifinals.

Hudson is 10-6 at the state tournament.  They made the state tournament in: 1989, 1992, 1996, 1998, 2001, 2002, 2004 and 2016.  They won the state championship in 2001 and 2004.

Superior is 60-24 at the state tournament.  They made the state tournament in:  1971, 1972, 1973, 1974, 1975, 1976, 1977, 1978, 1981, 1982, 1983, 1985, 1986, 1987, 1989, 1990, 1991. 1992, 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, 2000, 2002, 2003, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015.  They won state titles in 1971, 1972, 1974, 1981, 1982, 1990, 1992, 1994, 1995, 1996, 2003, 2005 and 2015.

Chippewa Falls and Eau Claire Memorial split in their meetings this season with each team winning on their home ice.  The Cardinals won 4-1, while Eau Claire Memorial won 3-1.

2016 - #1 Eau Claire Memorial defeated #4 Chippewa Falls in the sectional semifinals.  Eau Claire advanced to state and lost in semifinals
2015 - #1 Eau Claire Memorial advanced to state and lost in the quarterfinals.  #2 Chippewa Falls lost to #3 Hayward in the sectional semifinals.
2014 - #1 Eau Claire Memorial advanced to state and lost in the quarterfinals.  #4 Chippewa Falls lost in double overtime to #5 Hayward in the regional finals.
2013 - #1 Eau Claire Memorial advance to state and won the championship.  #6 Chippewa Falls lost to #3 Regis in the regional finals.
2012 - #1 Eau Claire Memorial defeated #3 Chippewa Falls in the sectional finals.  Eau Claire Memorial lost in the quarterfinals.

Chippewa Falls is 1-5 at the state tournament.  The made it to state in 1988, 1989, 1993, 1994 and 1999.

Eau Claire Memorial is 12-15 at the state tournament.  They made it to state in 1984, 1990, 1992, 1994, 2000, 2001, 2005, 2007, 2008, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016.  They won state titles in 2008 and 2013.

Location:  Mosinee Recreation Center

Recent history for Wausau West and Stevens Point
Stevens Point won at Marathon Park Ice Arena on December 1st with a score of 4-1.  January 12th found Wausau West at K.B. Willett and going home with a 7-1 win.

Post Season
2016 – #1 Wausau West lost in the sectional finals to #2 Antigo.  Antigo had defeated #3 Stevens Point in the sectional semifinals.
2015 - #1 Wausau West advanced to the state tournament with a win over #2 Antigo.  Antigo had defeated #3 Stevens Point in the sectional semifinals.
2014 - #1 Wausau West defeated #4 Stevens Point in the sectional semifinals.  Wausau West won the sectional and went to state.
2013 - #1 Wausau West defeated #2 Stevens Point in the sectional finals.

Wausau West currently sports a 14-15 record at the state tournament.  They made it to state in 1980, 1989, 1991, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015.  They won the championship in 2011.

Stevens Point is 14-17 at the state tournament.  They made it to state in 1982, 1985, 1987, 1988, 1990, 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2002, 2006, 2007 and 2009.  They won the state championship in 2002.

2017 – Regular season – West Salem won 3-1 on December 3rd in West Salem.

Post Season
2016 - West Salem defeated RWD 5-0 in the regional finals.
2015 – RWD made it to state as the #2 seed.  West Salem was the #4 seed and lost to #5 Baraboo in regional finals
2014 - #4 West Salem lost in sectional finals to #2 Onalaska.  RWD was the #5 seed and lost to #3 Baraboo in regional finals.
2013 - #3 West Salem lost is sectional finals to #1 Wisconsin Rapids.  RWD was the #6 seed and lost to West Salem in the sectional semifinals 3-2 in overtime.
2012 – West Salem was part of the Sparta Co-op and made it to state.

RWD is 0-2 at the state tournament having lost in the quarterfinals in both of their appearances in 2011 and 2015.

Recent history between Verona and Sun Prairie
Verona defeated Sun Prairie in both of their Big Eight Conference games this season.  In a game played at Sun Prairie on December 13th, Verona won 9-6.  They met in Verona on February 3rd with Verona claiming a 4-1 victory.

2016 - #4 Verona lost to #1 Middleton in the sectional semifinals.  #5 Sun Prairie lost to Verona in the regional finals.
2015 - #5 Verona lost a regional final game to #4 Madison West.   #9 Sun Prairie lost in the regional semifinals to #8 Oregon.
2014 - #1 Verona defeated #9 Sun Prairie in the regional finals.  Verona won the sectional and went on to win the state championship.
2013 - #1 Verona defeated #8 Sun Prairie in the regional finals.  Verona won the sectional and lost in the state championship game.
2012 - #3 Sun Prairie lost their regional final game to #6 Oregon.  #1 Verona won the sectional and lost in the state semifinals.

Verona has a 7-5 record at the state tournament.  They made the trip to Madison in 2002, 2003, 2009, 2012, 2013 and 2014.  They won the state championship in 2014.

Sun Prairie is 5-4 at the state tournament.  They made it to state in 1989, 1990, 1996, 1997 and 2004.  The claimed the state title in 1997.

2016 –#1 Waukesha won Section 7 and beat Madison Edgewood in the state quarterfinals before losing to Hudson in the semifinals. #9 Beloit lost to Stoughton in the regional round.
2015 – #2 Waukesha lost to #3 Janesville in the sectional semifinals. #6 Beloit lost to #3 Janesville in the regional round.

2014 - #1 Waukesha lost to #2 KMMO in the Section 7 final. #5 Beloit lost to nemesis #4 Janesville in the regional round.
2013 - #2 Waukesha lost to #4 Whitefish Bay in the sectional final. #8 Beloit lost to #1 KMMO in the first round.

Waukesha has won one of two games at state, both happening in 2016, their initial trip to Madison.

Beloit is 7-3 at the state tournament.  They made it to state in 1981, 1989, 1990, and 1999.  They won the state championship in 1999.

Arrowhead beat USM 6-3 on December 8 at home.

Post Season
2016 –#1 USM advanced to state and lost to eventual state champ Appleton United in the quarterfinal round. #4 Arrowhead lost to #1 USM in the sectional semifinals.
2015 –#2 USM lost in double overtime to #1 Cedarburg in the sectional title game. #8 Arrowhead lost to Cedarburg in the regional round.
2014 - #2 USM advanced to state and beat Wausau West in the semis (2 OT) but lost to Onalaska in the semifinals. #6 Arrowhead lost to #3 Cedarburg in the regionals.
2013 - #2 USM lost to #7 Homestead in the regionals. #3 Arrowhead lost to Homestead in the sectional semifinals.

University School has a record of 9-9 in 11 trips (1998, 2001-06, 2008, 2010, 2014, 2016). The Wildcats won titles in 2006 and 2010.

Arrowhead has won five of six in Madison in two trips (2005, 2009). They won the championship in 2009.
