Cardinals holds 54-13 shot edge over Tigers

The Chi-Hi boys hockey team was fresh, not rusty, outshooting Marshfield by a 54-13 margin en route to a 4-0 victory on Thursday evening in a regional final matchup at Chippewa Ice Arena.

The second-seeded Cardinals (19-6) move on to host sectional semifinals next Tuesday against the winner of Friday evening’s Eau Claire North/Ashland game.

Jordan Steinmetz had a hat trick for the Cardinals while Zech Wills added a goal in the second period to power Chi-Hi to victory in its playoff opener.

The Cardinals had nine days off since their last game, a 3-2 loss at Eau Claire North on Feb. 7, and after a frantic schedule to close the regular season, Chi-Hi coach Scott Parker said the rest was good for his team before the playoffs and it showed.

“It was a long, grueling season,” Parker said. “For us to have a little bit of time off at the end, get our legs back and get our legs fresh...I think our legs were a little dead in that North game and to get fresh legs is very important. For tonight’s game we went down to two lines and that didn’t work out all that well. We’re a three-line team and we need to keep our legs fresh this time of the year.
