Cardinals score one goal in each period for win

Cardinals outshoot Spartans 49 to 21

Sun Prairie defeated Madison Memorial 2-0 on December 10th.  They met again on January 24th in the Annual Groundhog Tournament.  Officially the game ended in a 5-5 tie, but the Spartans advanced in the winner bracket by winning the shootout.  Their third meeting of the season was in the regional finals of sectional six.

The Cardinals outshot the Spartans 17 to 5 in the first period of the game.  Ryan Kenny stopped 16 of the 17 shots, but one found the back of the net.  The Cardinals’ Alex Kurtz scored with Conor Mikula assisting on the goal with 1:50 remaining in the first period.  Sam Dunn finished the period with 5 saves for Sun Prairie.

The second period started with Wes Turner starting in goal for Madison Memorial.  The goaltender change was due to Ryan Kenny being accessed an Unsportsmanlike penalty and a 10 minute misconduct.  Kyle Hagerman boosted the Cardinals lead to 2 with a power play goal at 10:49 of the second.  Benett Halbleib and Alex Kurtz assisted on the goal.  Ryan Kenny returned to mind the goal with 4:55 remaining in the second period.  The period concluded with the Spartans trailing 2-0.  Turner stopped 10 of 11 shots in his 12 minutes 5 seconds in net.  Kenny did not face any shots in the last 4:55 of the period.  Dunn picked up another 10 saves in the period.

Madison Memorial was able to get on the scoreboard at 7:22 of the third period.  Jackson Welsh scored on a power play goal with Colin Supple assisting on the goal.  This brought the Spartans within one of the Cardinals.  However, Sun Prairie countered with a goal at 8:27 of the third with Kurtz and Mikula assisting on Josh McCrary’s goal.  Ryan Kenny collected 20 saves in the third and finished the game with 36 saves.  Sam Dunn finished the game with 20 saves as the Cardinals advanced in the tournament with a 3-1 victory.

Sun Prairie will host Middleton on Tuesday, February 21st in the Sectional Six semi-finals.
