Cougars limit Icebergs to 5 shots

The Icebergs traveled to Sun Prairie to play the Cougars in the opening round of the 2017 WIAA Girls’ Tournament.  The first period found Sun Prairie applying pressure in the offensive zone, but McKenzie Nisius was up to the challenge.  The Cougars broke through at 7:35 of the first, when Colleen Milligan passed the puck ahead to Annika Johnson.  Johnson made a cross ice pass to Jada Ward and Ward buried it putting the Cougars up 1-0.  The period came to an end with McKenzie Nisius stopping 19 of 20 shots.  Taylor Thornton finished the period with 2 saves.

Zephryn Jager put Sun Prairie up 2-0 with an unassisted goal at 3:07 of the second period.  Jager scored her second goal of the game 29 seconds later with Camille Baker and Brynna Banuelos assisting on the goal.  Stoughton was struggling to move the puck into the offensive zone, but were not able to get shots on goal.  Sun Prairie bumped the lead to 4, when Maria Griffiths scored at 10:33 with and assist from Mary Goss.  The Cougars took this opportunity to swap out goaltenders and brought Jenna Jager into the game.  Thornton finished the game with 27 minutes 33 seconds in goal and 2 saves.  The Cougars added one more goal in the second by converting a power play opportunity.  Defenseman Margo Thousand scored with 1:56 remaining in the period with Banuelos assisting.  Nisius picked up 17 saves, while the Sun Prairie defense refused to let any shots get to their goaltenders in the period.

Sun Prairie converted a second power play goal at 1:15 of the third.  Margo Thousand assisted on Jada Ward’s second goal increasing the Cougars’ lead to 6.  Colleen Milligan scored at 5:36 of the third with an assist from Ward.  The Cougars’ Ward completed the scoring with 4:43 left on the clock and Banuelos picking up her third assist.  Nisius completed the game with 42 saves after stopping 6 in the third.  Jenna Jager stopped the 3 shots she faced in the period.

Sun Prairie will host the fifth seeded Onalaska Hilltoppers on Tuesday, February 21st.
