Three goals in second period leads to victory

#1 Hudson outlasts #5 Fond du Lac

The #1 team in the state would be playing their second game of three in three days as they traveled to Fond du Lac to battle the #5 Warbirds.  The Raiders entered the game riding a a 13 game winning streak, while Fond du Lac were 14-0-2 since their last loss.

The first period ended the way it started, tied at zero.  Neither team could get the puck into the net and no players found their way to the sin bin.  Hudson placed 10 shots on goal, while Fond du Lac put the puck on net 6 times in the period.

Once the second period started, the scoreless game didn't last long.  Gretta Mohrland lit the lamp with an unassisted game 49 seconds in to put the Raiders up 1-0.  The Warbirds were assessed with a delay of game penalty at 4:28 of the second, when Drew Deanovich took a shot on goal after an offside whistle.  Fond du Lac killed off the penalty.  The Warbirds found themselves short-handed again with 12:01 remaining in the period,  Lauren Huettl found her way to the penalty box for body checking.  Hudson took advantage of the penalty at the 7:42 mark as Natalie Miller scored with Sydney Hendricks and Dani Robson assisting on the goal.  Angela Huepfel put the Raiders up by 3 with 7:18 remaining in the period.  Kylee Dyni picked up a 2 minute minor for body checking at 9:59, but the Warbirds were able to keep Hudson from scoring.  The period ended with Hudson leading 3-0.

The Warbirds were able to cut into the lead at 4:12 of the third on an unassisted goal by Hattie Verstegan.  The Raiders answered this goal with another power play goal at 6:58 of the third.  Molly Schuett assisted on Anna Wilgren's goal putting Hudson up 4-1.  Fond du Lac picked up their second goal of the game with 4.8 seconds remaining in the game, when Morgan Brown scored with Peyton Airaudi and Mary Skorupa being credited with assists.

Rebecca Binder finished the game with 32 saves for Fond du Lac.  Hudson's Cassie Schultz stopped 22 of the 24 shots she faced.

Fond du Lac finished the regular season with a 19-3-2 record.  They will open the WIAA playoffs with a home game on Friday, February 17th.  Beaver Dam will make the trip with the puck scheduled to drop at 5:30 PM.

Hudson has one more regular season game as they play Point-Rapids/Marshfield in Marshfield at 1:00 PM on Saturday, February 11th.  The Raiders first WIAA playoff game will be on Tuesday, February 21st and will host the winner of the Western Wisconsin Stars vs St. Croix Valley Fusion.
