Wilgren gets hattie, Schultz stops 34 in 4-0 victory

WAUSAU - The Central Wisconsin Storm’s season-long domination of in-state competition came to an emphatic end Saturday afternoon.

Anna Wilgren had a hat trick to lead No. 2 Hudson to a 4-0 win over the top-ranked Storm in a non-conference game at Marathon Park. The loss was just the fourth for the Storm and the first against a Wisconsin program this season. The previous three losses all came to Minnesota teams.

The loss also snapped the Storm’s seven-game unbeaten streak. It was the 12th straight win for the Raiders, who improved to 16-5 overall.

“Emotionally (the loss) hurts, but it also is something that we can learn from,” Storm coach Pete Susens said. “There are things we can get from watching the video of this game. We can find where we can get better and that is something we always look at. Our goal now, if I can be like Aaron Rodgers, is to run the table. That’s what we want to do.”

The Storm travels to Marshfield Thursday to face Point/Rapids/Marshfield in the their final game of the regular season. Seedings for the WIAA postseason will be released this week with the opening playoff games Feb. 16.

Wilgren, a junior defenseman who is committed to Minnesota State, Mankato, scored an even-strength goal, another when the teams were playing 4-on-4 and her last came on the power play in the third period.

Wilgren, who has 50 goals this winter, just missed a chance at a fourth goal. Her attempt from deep in the Hudson zone on an empty net at the other end of the rink hit a post as time expired.

The Storm (17-4-1) outshot Hudson 34-29 but could not get the puck past Hudson’s Cassie Schultz, who recorded the first shut out of the Storm this season.

Central Wisconsin had a 17-5 shot advantage in the third period.

Storm defenseman Jamie Henrickson fired a shot from in between the face-off circles late in the third period, which Schultz was able to glove and freeze for a face-off. Henrickson just turned away and tapped her stick on the ice in a moment of frustration.
