Girls #1 Central Wisconsin host #2 Hudson Raiders, while Boys #2 Hudson Raiders host #1 Wausau West Warriors

This week, as stated in the podcast “This Week in Wisconsin Prep Hockey,” the WiPH staff had numerous games to choose from for the Mayo Clinic Sports Medicine Game of the Week.  The easy and maybe most logical choice would have been to choose the aforementioned games and the boys game of the week did end up being #1 vs #2.  However, the girls game was chosen to be the Eastern Shores Conference Tournament championship game.

#2 Hudson Raiders (14-5-0) travel to Marathon Park Ice Arena play #1 Central Wisconsin Storm (16-3-1)

Neither team has lost to a Wisconsin team this season.  Hudson started the season with 8 of their first 9 games against teams from Minnesota.  The Raiders went 3-5 against their Minnesota opponents, which currently have a combined record of 87-79-11.  The other game during their opening 9 games was a 5-2 victory over Hayward.  Central Wisconsin’s 3 losses have come against out-of-state opponents (Bismarck, ND 14-3-0; Forest Lake, MN 14-6-1 and Princeton, MN 17-6-0).  The Storm have posted a win over Orono, MN 7-11-0.

The teams have played 6 similar opponents (USM, Hayward, St. Croix Valley, Chippewa Falls/Menomonie, ECA and Bay Area).  Central Wisconsin has gone 7-0-1 against these teams, including 2 victories over Hayward and USM.  Hudson has gone 7-0-0 against the teams with 2 victories over the ECA Stars.

A tale of the tape looks like this:

  Central Wisconsin Hudson Raiders
Goals per Game 4.85 4.79
Goals Allowed per Game 1.30 2.02
Power Play Percentage 12.9% 33.3%
Penalty Kill Percentage 93.2% 84.9%
Allowed Shots on Goal per Game 14.6 20.4
Shots on Opponent Goal per Game 37.5 37.1
Opponent Win Percentage .604 .514

Central Wisconsin is led by senior Katelyn Ramthun with 18 goals and 17 assists.  Seniors Katelynn Schilling (16 goals 7 assists) and Maggie Plaza (12 goal 9 assists) are second and third on the team’s offensive punch.  Junior Chloe Westberg has been solid minding the net stopping 251 of 275 shots in her 952 minutes 53 seconds in net. (Note: Schilling is out with a broken thumb and likely will not play.)

Junior Anna Wilgren leads the Raiders with 42 goals and 14 assists.  Sydney Hendricks, a sophomore, is the only other player on the team in double digit goals or assists with 13 goals and 14 assists.  Junior Cassie Schultz has played every minute in goal for the Raiders stopping 349 of 388 shots.

As the season has progressed, both teams have learned to rely on other players besides the team leaders.  Some of this has been due to attrition (players being injured or sick) and some due to teams double teaming players.

While this doesn’t help predict the winner of this game, it should show that it will be a tightly contested game.  If you are interested in attending, the puck is scheduled to drop at 2:30 PM Saturday, February 4th, at Marathon Park Ice Arena in Wausau.
