Storm gets 4-1 win over host USM

Senior Katelyn Ramthun scored three goals to lead the Central Wisconsin Storm to a 4-1 victory over the University School co-op in a non-conference girls’ hockey game on Friday, January 27th at USM.

Ramthun’s hat trick was the difference in the contest.  The Wildcats gave the top-ranked Storm a hard-fought game.  The action went back and forth all night as the teams provided the crowd with plenty of fast-paced hockey.  The teams stayed close through the early going; the Storm had to work strenuously to slowly pull away and gain their fifth-straight win, all on the road.

USM’s junior goaltender, Juliana Strother, had a fine game for the Wildcats.   She made 25 saves while junior Chloe Westberg made 12 saves in the visitors’ net.

“I was really encouraged by the way our girls played tonight,” said Jake Haury, USM’s head coach.  “The Storm is the best team in the state for a reason.  But we gave them a real test tonight.  I was happy with Juliana’s performance in goal. She’s come a long way this year.  She kept us in the game by giving her teammates her best against a top-opponent.”

The teams played to a 0-0 tie until the last 11 seconds of the first period.  With the Storm on a power play, junior Emelia Edmondson skated into the Wildcats’ zone with puck.  She headed into the right corner then curled up the boards and whipped a pass to senior Jamie Henrickson at the blue line.  Henrickson stepped in and gunned a high shot over Strother’s glove for the goal.

Ramthun scored her first goal at 1:24 of the second period.  Henrickson retrieved the puck in the left corner of the Storm zone and passed it to Ramthun at the center of the blue line.  Ramthun skated through center ice.  She stickhandled around a defenseman, cut to the right circle, then drilled a shot into the far side of the net to give her team a 2-0 lead.

Ramthun scored again at 11:30 while helping the Storm kill a penalty.  The puck bounced off the stick of a USM defenseman at the Storm blue line and popped to Ramthun.  She sped away on a breakaway.  As she closed in on the Wildcats’ goal, she made a move to drop Strother, pulled the puck to her backhand, and dished a short shot into the net.

The Wildcats gained some hope when they scored early in the third period.  Taking a faceoff in the left circle in the Storm zone, sophomore Karly Lamoreaux drew the puck behind her.  Gaby Turer skated through, collected the puck, then took a shot.  Westberg saved it.  It rebounded into the crease.  Junior Abby Hentzen took a swipe at it, but it jumped further out to Turer, who was moving in.  The sophomore one-timed a short shot into the net at 3:00.

Ramthun clinched the victory for the Storm with her third goal.  During a faceoff in the right circle in the USM zone, Edmondson skated off the boards, got the puck in the circle, threaded through to the slot, and fired.  Ramthun had moved to the edge of the crease.  She controlled the puck and snapped a shot past Strother at 14:45.

With a 16-3 record, the Storm continues their road game string when they head to Green Bay to play the Bay Area Ice Bears Saturday at 4:00 p.m. USM is 10-8-1 and 3-2 in the Eastern Shores Conference.  The Wildcats play Appleton United in an important Eastern Shores Conference game at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, January 28th at the Appleton Family Ice Center.
