Badger Lightning hosts Brookfield Glacier in Child Abuse Awareness game on January 21

Child Abuse Awareness Game, January 21, at Pierce Park Pavilion

The Badger Lightning will host Brookfield Glacier in a 5:00 PM game on January 21st at Pierce Park Pavilion in Lake Baraboo.  The Badger Lightning team has decided to have a game for the second year to help bring more information out on Child Abuse.

Unless otherwise noted, the information in this article was taken from the Wisconsin Child Abuse and Neglect Report Annual Report for Calendar Year 2015 to the Governor and Legislature (s. 48.981(9), Wis. Stats).  The full report can be seen on the internet at https://dcf.wisconsin.gov/files/cwportal/reports/pdf/can.pdf.

According to the report filed, in 2015 there were 43,907 maltreatment allegations filed.  This number includes cases for:

  • Neglect - 25,924 reported with 3,282 substantiated
  • Physical Abuse - 11,351 reported with 871 substantiated
  • Sexual Abuse - 5,616 reported with 1,091 substantiated
  • Emotional Damage/Abuse -1,016 reported with 34 substantiated

This breaks down to 12.02% of the cases reported evidence was found that substantiated a possible case for abuse.  Out of the substantiated cases 62.2% were for neglect, 20.7% for sexual abuse, 16.5% for physical abuse and 0.6% for emotional damage/abuse.

On July 30, 2015 an article in Time magazine titled:  "FBI: Child Abuse 'Almost at an Epidemic Level' in U.S." stated:

"Despite rescuing 600 children last year, the FBI says child sex abuse is at epidemic levels where tens of thousands of children are believed to be sexually exploited in the country each year. “The level of paedophilia is unprecedented right now,” Joseph Campbell of the FBI told the BBC."

During the game last season and this season, Badger Lightning has invited the Badger City WI Chapter of Bikers Against Child Abuse to have an awareness table in the lobby during the game.
