Ben Zacho could have just put it on net at a tough angle to try to generate a potential rebound or to simply push the puck farther away from his own net.

After all, Eau Claire Memorial had to kill off a five-minute major penalty for the rest of overtime against crosstown rival Eau Claire North.

But the heady junior kept the puck on his stick for an extra second and waited for teammate Sam Jochimsen to come barreling up the ice. Zacho hit him in stride, and Jochimsen buried a wrist shot in the top corner for the Old Abes’ second shorthanded goal of the night, and Memorial outlasted North 4-3 in overtime in an epic city hockey clash Tuesday at Hobbs Ice Center.

“We just had Ben Zacho work really hard in the corner, he was able to get it to me in front of the net, and I just had to bury the winner,” Jochimsen said.
