ECM takes third place with 6-3 win

Eau Claire Memorial scored early and late and a few times in between as they bested host Notre Dame Academy 6-3 in the third place contest in the Showdown in Titletown tourney held this week at Cornerstone Community Center.

On the last Friday night in 2016, the Old Abes tallied just 22 seconds into the game as Ben Zacho stormed down the right boards and cut inside before firing a shot from the bottom of the right circle that snuck past NDA freshman goalie Bo Buckley for the early 1-0 lead.

The middle of the period got sloppy as there were 23 penalty minutes whistled before another puck went into the net.

The Tritons tied the game with just under four minutes left in the period while the teams skated 4-on-4.

Bryce Poshak took a pass in the high slot and ripped a shot that ECM goalie Trevor Hudecek got a piece of but not enough, as the puck trickled in to knot the game at one each. Brady Bjork earned a helper on the play.

Less than a minute later, ECM went ahead for good after a delay of game penalty on NDA, where a defender covered the puck just outside the goalie crease. The officials conferred for a few minutes before deciding on the call.

With three minutes left, Sam Hanson scored on the 4-on-3 power play, with assists to Hutson Collins and Dawson Schwengler to make it 2-1.

The period ended with Hudecek recording 13 saves and Buckley with nine stops.

The second period flew by, with nearly 13 minutes going by with nary a mark on the score sheet. But the last 4:15 saw a quartet of goals scored, two by each team.

Brenden Olson and Zacho teamed up on a 2-on-1 with Olson getting the score at 12:45 to give ECM a 3-1 lead.

Less than a minute later, Bjork scored from the low right side to cut the margin to 3-2. Poshak and Mike Gregoire had helpers on the play.

Collins made a nice play to advance the lead to 4-2. He skated down the right side and fired a shot from the top of the right circle that beat the NDA goalie for the unassisted goal.

WiPH Game Summaries

It looked like that would be the score going into the second break, but Jon Holzbach had different ideas.

The junior scooped up a rebound of a Logan Braun shot and snuck it past the ECM goalie to make the score 4-3 with just 24 seconds left in the middle period.

That's how it ended, with Hudecek stopping 10 pucks and Buckley eight in the stanza.

The third period saw two late goals, but both were by ECM as the Tritons were unable to narrow the margin.

Coby Kison scored for the Abes a few seconds after a power play expired, making it 5-3 with just over five minutes left. Connor Clark had the assist on the play.

Two minutes later, Schwengler scored from the left dot for the final tally.

Hudecek stopped all 11 shots in the period and finished with 34 saves in the win, while Buckley had six saves, ending with 23 on the game.

Eau Claire Memorial improved to 7-3-1 with the win, while Notre Dame dropped to 5-5, including their second loss to ECM this season.
