Overtime goal advances Wings in Titletown Showdown

This week’s Game of the Week was the third game in the Showdown in Titletown, held at the Cornerstone Arena. Games one and two needed shootouts to break the overtime ties. Trenton Tucker made sure that didn’t happen in the third game, when he banged home a one-timer with 2:06 left in overtime to lift the Waukesha Wings to a 3-2 win over Neenah/Hortonville/Menasha.

There were a lot of shots taken in this game, but not very many that made it to the goalies. Both teams did remarkable jobs of clogging the shooting lanes and blocking shots. After two periods, the score was tied at 2-2, and only 19 shots had made it to the net, 12 by the NHM Rockets, and 7 by the Wings.

Alec Elkin got the scoring started for the Rockets, 7 minutes into the first period. Elkin had just come off the bench when he intercepted  a breakout pass just inside the Wings blue line. He then walked around a  defenseman and made a similar move around Wings goalie Garrett Larsen, tucking the puck into the net behind Larsen.

The Rockets generated a good scoring chance later in the period, on a two on one with Elkin carrying the puck, and Tyler Hafeman to his left. Elkin went hard and wide around the defenseman, then fed a perfect pass through the slot to Hafeman, but Garrett Larsen came across just in time to stop the redirect.

Midway through the second period, Wyatt Wilderman tied it up for Waukesha. He took a long stretch pass from Kevin Broda, catching it right around the NHM blue line. Wilderman went hard around the defense, then cut across the front of the crease, forcing NHM goalie Preston Long to move across with him. Wilderman waited for a gap to open up, then slid the puck through.

Just over a minute later Cody Dias took a pass from Travis Treml just inside the Wings blue line. Dias skated down the slot and put a shot in tight on the glove side that Larsen got a piece of, but not enough to keep it out of the net, putting Neenah back up 2-1.

Late in the second period, Waukesha’s Josiah Dietrich took the puck into the Rockets right corner and got laid out, but managed to cycle the puck down low to Garrett Wilderman. Wilderman took the puck and found Trent Tucker in the slot for a quick one-timer that tied the game up at 2 each.

The third period saw a few more shots getting to the net, but none that got by Long or Larsen, so this game followed suit for the day, and went into overtime.

With just 2:06 left in OT, Ian Malcolmson had the puck below the Rockets goal line when he spotted Tucker in the slot. A quick pass, and a very quick, bang-bang, one-timer between the pads put this one away for the Wings.
