Beversdorf and Cox each score a pair in win

In another classic clash between two of southeast Wisconsin’s top boys’ hockey teams, the Arrowhead Warhawks defeated their arch-rival, University School, 6-3 in a Classic Eight Conference game on Thursday, December 8th at the Mullett Center in Hartland.

“I’ve got to give Arrowhead credit for this one,” said Jason Woods, USM’s head coach.  “They brought an energy, which we lacked in the third.  I know we have been in a run of a lot of games in a short amount of time, but you just have to find that little extra something to pull you through.  Inconsistency has been our number one issue.  In effort, in execution, in all phases of the game.  Tonight it caught us.  Arrowhead is a great opponent, you can't play inconsistently and with a lack of effort and beat them.  We just need to keep plugging away at it.”

The Warhawks were contentious in their play throughout the match.  Although the save totals were nearly even in every period, the Warhawks brought more fire power and accuracy.  They took away time and space from the Wildcat shooters with solid checking in a 0-0 first period.

The Warhawks had 14 minutes of penalties in the second period, including a span of two minutes during which they were two players down, but their aggressive penalty killing frustrated the Wildcats, preventing USM from achieving any rgood chances to score.

Arrowhead scored the game’s first goal on a power play in the opening minute of the second period.   The Warhawks Caleb Beversdorf got the puck in the left corner of the Wildcats’ zone.  He passed the puck to the near point to Jack Schlinsog, who moved it to Elijah Tormala at the center of the blue line.  Tormala blazed a shot past USM’s goaltender, Frank Fee at 0:40.

USM tied the score later in the second.  Skating out of the Wildcats’ zone, Charlie Mahoney lined a pass cross center ice to Blake Carey.  Carey cut across the Arrowhead blue line, moved down to the left circle then whipped a wrist shot past Arrowhead’s goalie, Peter Genatempo, at 13:39.

Arrowhead went back ahead a little over a minute later.  With the teams playing four a side, Jaxson Carr skated the puck into the USM zone, curled behind the net and headed into the left corner and up the boards.  From the mid-boards he passed it to Tormala at the center of the blue line.  Tormala returned it.  Carr fired a shot at Fee.  The rebound dropped into the crease and Dylan Cox popped it between Fee’s legs at 1:54.

With just seconds left in the period, the Wildcats tied it back up at 2-2.  Nick Epperson gained control of the puck in the Warhawks’ left circle and fired a hard shot at Genatempo.  The rebound bounced to the outside edge of the right circle where defenseman Will Kennedy, got it and shot it back toward the net.  It hit the stick of Brandon McGill at the top of the goalie crease.  Epperson moved in, fished the loose puck away from the defensemen, pulled it to the left, and fired it through an opening at 16:47.

The Warhawks broke the game open with four goals in the final period.  They scored the first of the period in less than a minute.  Skating into center ice, Tormala wired a hard pass around the boards. Schlinsog stopped it in the left circle.  He skated below the goal line, turned and passed the puck into the unguarded high slot to Connor Akers.  Akers blazed a wrist shot past Fee at 0:52.

Arrowhead scored what would be the game winning goal while short-handed.  As the Wildcats moved the puck around the Arrowhead zone on the power play, Beverdorf rushed out, dove and blocked a point shot.  He hurried to his feet and took the puck away from the defenseman and skated off on a breakaway.  Entering the USM end, he rifled a shot from the right circle into the net at 8:49.

The Warhawks went two-goals ahead at 11:13 on another unassisted goal by Beversdorf.  Once again he knocked the puck away from a Wildcat player in the USM zone and raced off down the left boards on a one-on-one.  Inside the USM blue line, Beversdorf cut to the center.  He protected the puck with his body as he skated into the slot.  There, he shot, and made the score 5-2.

USM pulled a bit closer at 12:57. As he crossed into the Arrowhead zone, Epperson fired the puck.  It hit a defender and bounced to Mahoney who had joined the rush.  Moving near the net, Mahoney pushed it back to Epperson at the edge of the crease.  Epperson shoved it past Genatempo for the goal.

The Warhawks sealed the Wildcats’ fate on an empty net goal by Cox with assists by Akers and Beversdorf at 15:37.

The win put Arrowhead into first place in the Classic Eight Conference.  The Warhawks are now 5-1 overall and 2-2 in the conference.  USM is 4-2 and currently in the conference basement with an 0-1 mark.  The Wildcats play Madison Edgewood in a non-conference game at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 10th at the LaBahn Arena in Madison.
