In a rematch of the WIAA sectional final game last year that saw the Fury defeat the Metro Lynx (Middleton) for its first every state tournament berth, the two Badger Conference rivals skated to a tie through regulation and overtime.

“I thought overall we played a pretty solid game,” head coach Dave Soddy said.

Rock County got out to a 2-0 lead after one period thanks to a goal from junior Madi Hagemann (Janesville Parker) 5:48 into the game, and a power-play goal from Milton High School junior Maggy Henschler with just more than four minutes remaining in the period.

“We came out on fire in the first period and scored those two goals,” Soddy said. “Madi Hagemann on that breakaway pushed the puck up ahead and took it hard to the net, which is impressive. That’s one of the things we’ve been trying to work on. On the second goal, we ran our power play really well.”

But the Lynx responded in the second period with three goals. Siera Petet cut the Fury lead to 2-1 early in the period before MHS junior Danielle Heitsman found MHS senior Jessica Jerome for a one-time slap shot goal midway through the period to put the Fury back ahead by two.

“We implemented a new strategy,” Soddy said. “Riley Burke, our senior, is really good at taking faceoffs. We put her in as a faceoff specialist. She won the faceoff, got it back to Dani Heitsman, Dani passed it across to Jess and Jess had a really nice shot right on goal and scored. That was a really nice situation there.”

Brooke Rockouski scored the next goal for the Metro Lynx on a power play at the 10:11 mark of the second period. Ella Hall scored late in the second period for the Lynx to tie the game.

The two teams battled through the third period and overtime scoreless to finish in the tie.

MHS junior McKaylie Buescher finished with 32 saves in goal for the Fury. Rock County fired off 20 shots on goal.

“I thought our defense, including Dani Heitsman and Jessica Jerome, did a really nice job on keeping Metro from good, quality shots, along with our forwards and centers,” Soddy said. “I thought McKaylie did a really nice job in goal.”
