They no longer wish to be the feel good story. Cinderellas? Nope, that slipper has been put on and worn out. The Eau Claire North boys hockey team wants a permanent seat at the table.

A year after advancing to the sectional finals and three seasons removed from going 3-21 in 2012-13, the Huskies have a strong nucleus returning and an influx of young talent. That should make them serious competition for the top teams in the conference and sectional.

Last season, one in which the Huskies went 16-8, the scrappy bunch did a lot of dump and chase and tried to beat teams by physically wearing them down. That physical component of their game will still be there, but third-year coach Ryan Parker is hoping that’s not the only thing that will identify his North squad.

“The next step I’m looking at is that we’re looking to come out and play a more skilled style of hockey,” he said. “We have guys now that are a lot more skilled than we’ve had in the past. We’re looking to play a style we can open it up a little bit, catch those long passes and capitalize in key situations.”
