Junior forward nets a natural hat trick in first 12 minutes

The Waukesha Wings traveled three hours north to take on Wausau West at Marathon Park on Friday night, but the timing was all wrong. You see, the night before, the Warriors were upended by Stevens Point and Friday night was a night of retribution for the Warriors.

The Warriors got a natural hat trick from Josh Bohlin in the first 12 minutes and never looked back in a 5-2 victory in the non-conference match-up between northern and southern powerhouses.

West came out firing from the opening puck drop, sending 20 shots at Wings goalie Garrett Larsen in the first period of play. It took four minutes for West to get on the board, as Bohlin skated down the right side and ripped a shot from the right dot that snuck under the pads of Larsen for the 1-0 lead. Christian Bardarson earned a helper on the play.

West went on the power play a few minutes later and got their second goal from Bohlin, who fired a shot from the high slot that beat the goalie on the glove side. Cade Lemmer and Bardarson were credited with assists on the score.

Two minutes later, Bohlin took advantage of a turnover in the Waukesha d-zone and his wrister from the left circle made it 3-0. The unassisted goal came at the 11:46 mark of the first.

The period ended with Larsen listed with 17 saves and West netminder Jacob Warnke with four.

The Wings (3-1) cut the lead to a pair on an early second period power play goal.

Senior forward Ian Malcolmson scored from the top of the left circle on the man advantage at 1:14 of the second to make it 3-1, with an assist from Chad Larsen.

But West (3-1) got that goal back in less than a minute when Kellen Tharaldson's shot from the point was tipped by Marc Sippel to make it 4-1. Lemmer also got an assist on the play.

A few minutes later on a delayed penalty, Waukesha had a 3-on-1 break, but Warnke made a save before the whistle blew, stopping play.

However, it was West that scored just a few seconds after the penalty expired. After a shot fired high bounced off the glass and popped back out front, Brandon Thorson punched in the rebound to make the score 5-1. Frank Dovorany got an assist on the score.

The period ended with no further score, as Warnke stopped nine shots while Larsen made 14 saves in the period.

Malcolmson scored on the power play during a five minute major late in the final period to account for the final score.

Warnke made nine saves to finish with 22 and Larsen had eight in the period to total 39 stops on the evening.
