Gobbler Cup opener goes to extra period

It took over 57 minutes of play to determine a victor, but Hayward's Sarah Pearson did the honors when she picked off an errant pass in the high slot and fired a shot off the left post and beyond ECA Stars goalie Annamarie Holtz for the game-winner in the Gobbler Cup in Mosinee.

Final score: Hayward 3, ECA Stars 2.

The pre-season #1 Lady Canes were challenged throughout by the Stars, ranked sixth in the WiPH poll. It took three-plus periods to decide the outcome.

The first period was scoreless until late, but midway through the stanza the Stars had the best chance. Abby Jochimsen grabbed a pass in the slot but she didn't get good wood on the shot, which skittered wide left.

The Stars tallied first with less than two minutes left in the period. Lauren Carmody scored from the low left side at the 15:21 mark, with help from Abigail Stow and Charlotte Akervik.

The teams skated off for the first intermission with the score 1-0. Shots were even at seven apiece.

The Hurricanes blew onto the ice and before you could say Cat 5, the game was tied.

Kaelin Laub fired a shot from the right circle and the puck clinked off the post, lighting the lamp for the Lady Canes at the 53 second mark. The unassisted goal tied the game at one.

Each team had a power play chance in the next five minutes, but both came up empty in the search for the man advantage goal.

Being on the penalty kill did not deter Stow, as she did a credible Bobby Orr impression to take the lead.

Skating down the right side, she cut across the slot and after Hayward goalie Lauren Tremblay missed on a poke-check attempt, slid the puck between the outstretched right skate of the talented netminder and the post to make it 2-1 in favor of the Stars.

WiPH Game Summaries

Almost exactly a minute later, Hayward got the equalizer from one of their fine seniors.

Gabby Tremblay sent a pass from the center of the ice to the left side, where Jenna Curtis corralled the biscuit and sniped it past Holtz from the face-off area to knot the game at two.

ECA had two power play chances late but Hayward was able to kill off the misdemeanors to keep the score tied at 2-2.

Shots were 14-8 in favor of the Stars in the period.

Each team had a power play opportunity in the third period, as well as a breakaway or odd-man rush, but Holtz and Tremblay were solid, rejecting all shots fired at them. Tremblay stopped 18 shots, while Holtz turned aside eight pucks in the period.

It appeared that a shootout after the eight minute overtime was a possibility, but Pearson nixed that idea with her unassisted goal with 1:38 left in the fourth period.

Tremblay stopped four shots for a game total of 41, while Holtz made four saves in the period (25 overall) for the Stars.

Hayward (1-0) will face the Central Wisconsin Storm Saturday at 2:30 for the Gobbler Cup title, while ECA (1-1) will take on University School for the consolation crown.
