Maybe it wasn't David and Goliath revisited, but to look at the two teams on the ice, the sizes might have been comparable to the old underdog's tale from the Bible.

At one point, the average height of the players on the ice for host Wisconsin Rapids was 5'7", while the visiting Waupaca team towered some four inches taller.

Much like in the original version, the little guys almost pulled off an upset, but after scoring the first goal of the game, they watched the Comets score the last five for a 5-1 win Tuesday night at the South Wood County Rec Center.

Waupaca had control of the contest early, but Rapids (0-3) would get on the board first. Sophomore Logan Zimmerman buried a nice pass from Dan Janik to give Rapids a 1-0 lead at the 7:04 mark of the first. Caleb Schroer also got an assist on the play.

Waupaca junior Bjorn Asher knocked home a rebound to tie the game at one at the 10:46 mark, with assists to Brad Navin and Jared Erickson.

That's how the period would end, despite a huge shot edge of 18-4 in favor of Waupaca.

"I don't think anyone (in Waupaca's locker room) was satisfied with how we were playing, so coach (Randy Flesch) got after us in the locker room and we picked it up," said Navin.

"Rapids came out and gave us a heck of a first period," said Flesch.

The two squads battled furiously during the middle period, but neither team was able to score until Navin took matters into his own hands while on the power play. The senior--who recently committed to the University of Wisconsin--grabbed a pass from his quarterback spot on the right point, deked around a diving forward, and ripped a shot from the top of the right circle that beat Rapids goalie Cole Paulsen knee high on the glove side to give the Comets a 2-1 lead at the 10:33 mark. Beau Ash was credited with a helper on the play.

Just over four minutes later, Asher scored his second of the game when he took off down the right side, got past the defender and let off a shot from a very tough angle near the goal line, only to see the puck bounce off Paulsen's left pad and into the net to make the score 3-1 with 2:16 left in the second.

"Bjorn is a junior and is a speedy player, and it's nice to have him on (Navin's) line," stated Flesch.

The Comets once again held the shot advantage, 13-6 in the stanza.

The third period saw some inspired play that resulted in two penalties apiece in the first seven minutes, but neither team could make the other pay until Erickson made the score 4-1 when he grabbed a nifty pass from behind the net from Navin and ripped a shot past Paulsen's blocker with just over six minutes left to play.

Navin would add the final tally with just nine seconds left to account for the final score. Freshman Natasha Smith was given an assist on the play to round out the scoring.

Waupaca goalie Zach Martin stopped 10 shots in the win, while Paulsen was much busier on the other end, making 38 saves for Rapids.

The Comets improve to 3-0 and will host Antigo on Thursday, while Rapids will play host to Black River Falls on Friday.

"We've won our first three, so hopefully we can keep rolling," noted Navin.
