Bob Nelson Tournament

The University School hockey team lost to Blake School 4-1 in the first round of the 22nd Annual Bob Nelson Tournament hosted by Blake School in Hopkins, Minnesota.  Blake is ranked 6th in Division A in hockey rich Minnesota.

Blake dominated the game.  “They’re a good team.”  USM coach Cal Roadhouse stated.  “They have lots of seniors who skate well and move the puck quickly.  We have a tough schedule, and if we keep playing quality teams like this, we’ll learn a lot and improve our play.”

The Bears out shot USM 45-16, but scored 3 of their 4 their goals on power plays.  They had plenty of power play opportunities as the Minnesota referees called 12 penalties on the Wildcats and 6 on the Bears.

Blake’s first power play came at 8:21 of the first period.  Senior Ryan Bullock had the puck at the point and sent it down the right boards to senior George Ordway. Ordway lined a cross ice pass to senior Ford Traff in the left circle, and Traff one-timed a shot past USM’s senior goalkeeper Ben Myers.

Blake’s second goal came at 7:33 of the second period. Ordway moved the puck to Traff on the right side.  Traff lined a pass to senior Donald Chute who had moved into the slot and Chute gunned a quick shot in.

Blake got its third power play goal just over two minutes later.  Sophomore Chris Chute sent a pass to senior Reed Mandel at the point and Mandel fired a slap shot past Myers at 9:55 of th second period.

USM scored its lone goal while killing a 5 on 3 penalty.  Senior Aaron Storch grabbed a loose puck in the USM end and chipped a shot into center ice.  The puck hit a Blake defender’s stick and bounced toward the center face off circle.  USM senior Simon Leahy outraced another Blake player to the loose puck, flew in on a breakaway, deked Blake’s senior goalkeeper Ryan Hayes and sent the puck into the net at 16:25 of the third period.

USM nearly scored another on the same two man down situation when Storch tucked a wrap around past Hayes, but the referee said he was about to blow the play dead, so the goal didn’t count.

Blake got its final goal on an empty net shot by Ordway;  senior Ben Bennett and Donald Chute were given assists on the goal.

In the game Hayes made 15 saves while Myers played a great game making 41 saves.

USM is now 1-3.  The Wildcats play the consolation game of the Bob Nelson tournament against Owatonna High School at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday at Blake School.
