Storm takes Omni Center Midsummer Meltdown title

Central WI edges Appleton United in extra period

Trailing 2-0 to Appleton United with just over 12 minutes left in the championship game of the Omni Center Midsummer Meltdown, the Central Wisconsin Storm rallied for two goals in a span of four minutes in the middle of the third period to send the game to overtime.

There, Katelyn Schilling scored the game-winner at the 6:13 mark of the period to give the Storm a 3-2 win Sunday afternoon in Onalaska.

Freshman Kourtney Koster scored in the middle of the second to give AU a 1-0 lead, and then tallied again two minutes into the third for a two-goal lead. Both goals were assisted by Sarah Marvin.

That's when the Storm surged.

Eden Gruber cut the deficit to 2-1 for the Storm at the 6:49 mark of the third, with assists to Kenna Bailey and Samantha Brown.

After Brown went off for tripping at 10:39, it took the Storm just 16 seconds to tie the game on the shortie by Emelia Edmondson, with help from Allison Stevens.

That would be the final score of the period as the game advanced to the extra stanza.

Schilling made the Storm the champions with her goal just over six minutes in.

Sydney Weiland had 15 saves in the win for CWS, while Makenzy Hoisington stopped 40 shots for United.

The Storm went 3-0, while AU went 1-1-1.

3rd place game

Fond du Lac got two goals and an assist from Morgan Brown as they doubled up on Rock County Fury 4-2 in the third place game on Sunday.

Brown and Mary Skorupa scored in the opening period to give FDL a 2-0 lead, but the Fury would bounce back in the second to tie the game.

Ally Burke and Danielle Heitsman popped in power play goals in a span of 65 seconds to knot the game at two.

Brown put Fondy ahead for good just less than two minutes later.

Callie Tighe put in the final score six minutes into the final period to account for the 4-2 score.

Maddy Ott and Lauren Huettl each tallied a pair of helpers for Fondy, while Skorupa notched one.

Maggy Henschler had an assist for Rock County.

Ashley Schmidt made 24 saves for FDL, while Sarah Vargo (14), McKalie Buescher (8), and Elena James (12) combined for 34 stops for the Fury.

Fondy finished the tourney with a 2-1-1 record, while the Fury ended at 1-2.

WiPH Game Summaries

sunday games

Black River Falls defeated Viroqua Sunday morning in the 6th/7th seeds game.

Abbie Johnson and Shay Lyden scored for BRF as they led 2-0 early in the second.

Emma Kolden cut the lead to 2-1 six minutes later with Viroqua's only goal.

Taylor Gular scored the third goal midway through the third period to account for the final score.

Kaytlin Johnson, Abbie Johnson, Olivia Waddell, and Sami Hansen each had assists for Black River Falls.

Josie Mathison stopped 18 shots in the win, while Ivy Shonka made 18 saves for Viroqua.

BRF finished at 1-2 and Viroqua completed the tourney 0-3.

Host Onalaska and Fond du Lac wrapped up the tourney with a 2-2 tie.

Kaley Manglitz scored early in the second period to give Ona the 1-0 lead. Seven minutes later, Callie Tighe knotted the game at one apiece.

Fondy grabbed a 2-1 lead less than a minute into the third period on a goal by Drew Deanovich.

Manglitz scored her second goal with just 15 seconds left to give Ona the tie game.

Jaiden Groshek had an assist for Ona, while Tighe, Lauren Huettl, and Maddy Ott each notched helpers for FDL.

Skylar Dannhoff had 31 saves for the Hilltoppers, while Ashley Schmidt stopped 14 pucks for Fondy.

game 1

Appleton United and Onalaska skated to a 2-2 tie in the opening contest of the tourney.

Annika Horman and Maddi Schultz scored for AU. Sascha Cromheecke and Kaley Manglitz tallied for Ona.

Skylar Dannhoff made 27 saves for Ona, while Mekenzy Hoisington stopped a dozen shots for AU.

game 2

Central Wisconsin got a pair of goals from Jamie Hendrickson as the Storm skated to a 4-1 win over Viroqua.

Emelia Edmondson and Eden Gruber also scored for the Storm, while Emma Kolden scored for Viroqua.

Sydney Weiland stopped 14 shots for CWS. On the other end, Ivy Shonka made 41 saves for Viroqua.

game 3

Kylee Dyni and Mary Skorupa scored for Fondy as they blanked Black River Falls 2-0.

Ashley Schmidt (3) and Rebecca Binder (8) combined for 11 saves for FDL. Josie Mathison was a bit busier, making 29 stops for BRF.

game 4

Kaley Manglitz scored twice as Onalaska edged Rock County 3-2 Saturday afternoon.

Jaiden Groshek also scored for the Hilltoppers.

For Rock County, Maggy Henschler and Danielle Heitsman knocked in goals.

Skylar Dannhoff had 22 saves for Ona, while McKalie Buescher stopped 15 shots for the Fury.

game 5

Appleton United jumped out to a 3-0 lead and held on for a 5-1 victory over Viroqua.

Anna Duehring, Annika Horman, Liisa Cramer, Maddi Schultz, and Sarah Marvin each scored for AU. Marvin also earned a playmaker and Shelby Hiltgen had a pair of helpers.

Kelsey Shaner scored the lone goal for Viroqua.

Emily Fischer stopped 14 shots for AU, while Ivy Shonka made 32 saves for Viroqua.

game 6

Kaitlyn Klapatauskas scored the lone goal as the CW Storm edged Fond du Lac 1-0.

Sydney Weiland had a 10-save shutout for CWS. Rebecca Binder stopped 29 of 30 shots for FDL.

game 7

Black River Falls got on the board first on a tally by Baileigh Johnson in the opening period, but Rock County got the last laugh, scoring the final three goals in a 3-1 win.

Danielle Heitsman, Ally Burke, and Zoie Steig scored for the Fury in the victory.

Elena James (6), Sarah Varga (5), and McKalie Buescher (8) combined for 19 stops for the Fury, while Josie Mathison had 35 saves for BRF.
