They might have won their first three pool games by a cumulative score of 14-4, but then the Madison White squad ran into a buzzsaw, otherwise known as the Hollydell Hurricanes, and was shut out 9-0 in Saturday's quarterfinal match at the Tier II U18 Nationals in Rochester, NY.

Wednesday (5-2 over LA Jr. Kings)

Gage Maurer got Mad White on the board early, scoring a power play goal on an assist from Shaughn Dean midway through the first period. MW had a 5-on-3 chance for 36 seconds midway through the second, but failed to capitalize on it. They did score an even strength goal just seven seconds after the penalty expired when Kyle Komplin cashed in with help from Dean and Chris Beglinger to make it 2-0. With 4:30 left in the second, that trio accounted for the scoring again, with Komplin's second goal on assists from Dean and Beglinger. That gave Dean a playmaker. The Kings got on the board just less than a minute later on a goal by Djordje Jugovic to make it 3-1, which is how the period would end. Mad White scored twice in a span of 3:39 in the middle of the third to put the game out of reach. Kory Seymour scored with help from Gabe Bosbeu, and then Dan Truehl scored with the assist going to Komplin to make it 5-1 with just over five minutes remaining. Nicholas Matejovsky scored for the Kings with 2:40 left to end the scoring. Even though the Kings outshot Madison White, the goaltending of Zach Woodman made the difference, as he saved 33 of 35 shots in the win.

Thursday (3-1 over Team Toledo)

Mad White scored first again, this time while short-handed. Chris Beglinger scored on the assist from Ryan Moore to make it 1-0 with 4:00 left in the first. Toledo tied the game just 33 seconds later on a goal by Jerry Murray. MW scored twice in the second to make it 3-1. Dan Truehl scored on an assist from Dylan Zink and then again on a goal by Gage Maurer, and assists by Beglinger and Kyle Komplin. The third period was filled with penalties (MW-8 minutes, Toledo-10 minutes) but neither team could score as Madison White earned a 3-1 victory. MW outshot Toledo 36-21, and Zach Woodman stopped 20 of 21 while earning his second win.

Friday (6-1 over Webster Cyclones)

In a game that saw four ten-minute misconduct penalties, Madison White blew past the Cyclones 6-1. MW scored just 47 seconds into the contest on a goal by Gabe Bosbeu, with assists from Brian Onken and Kory Seymour. That score would hold up until midway through the second when Jeff Edwards notched his first goal with an assist to Calvin Richardson. That would make it 2-0 and that's how it looked at the end of the second. The first two period saw only 16 minutes of penalties (MW-10, WC-6). Matt Strang scored to make it 3-0 early in the third on assists from Dylan Zink and Cass Smith with 14:37 left to play. The Cyclones got their only tally on a power play tally by Garrett Steves, but MW got that right back ten seconds later on a short-handed goal by Chris Beglinger, with assists from Zink and Gage Maurer. Then all hell broke loose. The rest of the game saw a combined 66 minutes of penalties (MW-24, WC-42), including all four misconduct penalties. Moore scored a power play goal with 2:11 left on a helper from Richardson, and then Kyle Komplin scored with an assist from Beglinger with 30 seconds left to make it 6-1. The action came to a furious finale with eight seconds left, when one MW player and two Cyclone players were each sent to the bin for a minor AND a misconduct charge. MW held a slight shot edge (38-33), and Zach Woodman had his third solid game, stopping 32 of 33 shots.

Saturday (9-0 loss to Hollydell Hurricanes)

Whether Madison White ran out of steam, were a little beat up from Friday's contest or just ran into a better team, they suffered a tough 9-0 loss in the quarterfinal round to end its hopes for a National title. Hollydell scored three times in the first, twice in the second, and four times in the third for a 9-0 margin. Mad White took 15 penalties (33 minutes) compared to four minutes of bin time for the Hurricanes. The victors were able to convert an amazing five (of 15) power plays in the contest. Zach Woodman stopped 35 of 44 shots, as Mad White lost the shot battle, 44-23, including no shots on goal in the third period.
