2010 USA Hockey Nationals: Madison Elite nab runner-up trophy

 Leading 2-1 after 14 minutes of play, the Tier II U16 Madison Elite team saw opposing Niagara Jr. Purple Eagles score five unanswered goals en route to a 6-2 win and a National Championship for the New York team. The loss came as a surprise, as the Madison team handed the Purple Eagles a 3-0 defeat on Thursday in pool play. On Championship Sunday, the Eagles came to play. Brett Skibba scored at the 12:25 mark of the first to give Madison a 1-0 lead. Alex Shuchuk and Trevor Hoth earned assists on the play. Just 41 seconds later, Austin Crossley scored the equalizer for the Purple Eagles. Not to be outdone, Christian Gerhart scored an unassisted goal for Madison to give the Badger Boyz a 2-1 lead with 2:48 left in the first. Chris Chapin scored for Niagara with 1:29 left to tie the game at two. All the rest was Niagara, as the Purple Eagles scored three times in the second and added an empty-netter with 21 seconds left in the contest to account for the final score. Tyler Stensaas started in net for Madison, and stopped 22 of 26 shots in the game. During the tournament, Stensaas held the opponents scoreless for 115:06 before giving up four goals in the final game. He posted a sterling 1.34 GAA, to go along with a .957 save percentage. Hoth led all Tier II U16 Division 4A scorers with 14 points (8g-6a).

Wednesday (5-1 win over California Heat)

The game was scoreless until 3:14 left in the first when Austin Frank knocked in a goal, assisted by Eric Howell for a 1-0 lead. Trevor Hoth made it 2-0 with just under ten minutes left in the second on an unassisted power play goal. Three minutes later, Hoth stretched the lead to three on a short-handed goal with assists to Brett Skibba and Ronald Lindgren. Cali finally got on the board with two minutes left in the period on a Brandon Smith penalty shot to make it 3-1. Brandon Thayer made it 4-0 on a tally 3:20 into the third. He was assisted by Lindgren. The final score was with 28 seconds left by Cameron Brown, with help from Cody Iverson. Goalie Dylan Anderson stopped 29 of 30 shots in the game, which saw Madison Elite outshoot its foes by a tally of 39-30.

Thursday (3-0 win over Purple Eagles)

Cody Iverson made it 1-0 early in the first period on the power play with an assist from Brett Skibba. The lead was 2-0 early in the second on a goal from Skibba, with assists from Alex Shuchuk and Trevor Hoth. The final score occurred with 5:41 left in the third on a score by Eric Howell, with helpers to Brandon Thayer and Austin Frank. The refs were busy in the contest, doling out a total of 56 penalty minutes (ME-34, NPE-22). Madison Elite converted on 1 of 9, while the Purple Eagles were 0 of 9. Tyler Stensaas put forth a stellar effort, stopping all 38 shots on goal, while Madison Elite managed only 15 shots on net, but made three of them count.

Friday (5-3 victory over Team Toledo)

Madison streaked to a 4-0 lead, but held on for dear life as Toledo made things interesting with two power play goals in a 29 second span in the final period. Cameron Brown scored on the power play with just over four minutes left in the first, assisted by Jason Ford and Neil McMillan. Trevor Hoth scored with an assist from Ford for a short-handed goal with 48 seconds left in the stanza to make it 2-0. Just 1:19 into the second, Brandon Thayer made it 3-0 with help from Austin Frank and Eric Howell. The lead was stretched to 4-0 with just over three and one-half minutes left when Hoth tallied on an assist from Austin Janssen. Then came the fun part... Nathan Opblinger scored for Toledo while on a 5-on-3 power play, and then scored again less than thirty seconds later while on the man advantage to make it 4-2 with just over ten minutes left. Then, just 18 seconds later, Taylor Brown scored with assists from McMillan and Hoth to give Madison a 5-2 lead. Kasey Rupp scored to Toledo with 54 seconds left to account for the final. Toledo was proficient on the power play, scoring on 2 of 6 chances while Madison Elite converted on just 1 of 11. Dylan Anderson stopped 15 of 18 shots, while Madison managed 31 shots in the game.

Saturday (10-0 win over Bridgewater Bears)

This one was all Madison as they scored three in the first, two in the second, and five in the third to walk away in a laugher. Taylor Brown (3g-1a) and  Trevor Hoth (3g-1a) led the team in scoring. Brandon Thayer, Jason Ford, Brett Skibba, and Cameron Brown each added goals. Ronald Lindgren and Cody Iverson each notched two assists for the winners, while Drew Komplin, Eric Howell, Alex Shuchuk, Blake Jorenby, Skibba, Cameron Brown, and Isaac Hale each had single assists. Shots were 40-28 in favor of Madison, and Tyler Stensaas made 28 stops in his second shutout.

Saturday (7-2 win over Sabres)

Madison scored two early goals (Trevor Hoth and Austin Frank) in the first 3:22 before Joseph Patzin scored his first of two goals for the Sabres. Brandon Thayer and Drew Komplin also scored in the first to give Madison a 4-1 lead going into the second. Cody Iverson and Jason Ford scored in the second period to more or less put the game away for the boys from the Badger State. Eric Howell scored midway through the third to give Madison Elite a 7-1 lead before Patzin closed out the scoring for the Sabres with 19 seconds left. Assists: Thayer 2, Hoth 2, Taylor Brown 2, Ford, Frank, Brett Skibba, Alex Shuchuk. Dylan Anderson stopped 20 of 22 shots for Madison Elite.
